"Imagine it's not people walking in the courtyard--but a dragon. It's intimidating and it just doesn't belong there. Those footsteps would be frightening." Oh, of course. Because dragons were a necessary (and totally inconspicuous considering you know how common they were) analogy. ”Yes, but do remember that most of the animals that live here are bigger than us, faster than us, and I imagine would intimidate you rather quickly.” Really, Arthur was pretty sure a deer could frighten Merlin if it came up on him from behind a tree or something. Anything that could hold its own wasn’t going to be afraid of them in the slightest. ”Though I must admit if a dragon was shouting about killing me I’d be concerned.” ”Sometimes I worry about you Merlin.” Sometimes.. most of the time.. every time he opened his mouth.. whatever. Merlin decided to get really cute (aka obnoxiously sassy) about the squirrel example and Arthur responded without looking back at him. ”Well I wouldn’t let you shoot any anything that could actually fight back.” Really, that should have been obvious. Beginners started with the basics.. and Merlin start about eight steps behind a beginner. ”I’ve told you- good servants are hard to come by.” When he did look back at said servant was after he tripped over a tree branch, which Arthur found pretty amusing because, come on, that kind of coordination should not have been natural. ”Not to worry- I’ll protect your bow with my life.” ”If you’ll value your life you’ll learn how to walk so you can hand it to me if I need it.” Arthur always had at least two weapons on him, so in the event he needed to kill something quickly, he wasn’t really at a disadvantage. Which of course, was the only reason Merlin was holding his bow.. because he knew it would take Merlin at least eight years to understand the signal Arthur was trying to get him to hand it over. ”Follow me- this way.” He said, suddenly, changing their direction. ”These weren’t made by any creature I recognize.” he explained, motioning to a set of tracks much larger than the last ones (Merlin asked for something harder than a squirrel) and of course, heading off in the direction of the large foreign thing.

So Merlin kind of failed with his analogy but that was because he was intimidated by everything in the forest so his opinion didn't really count. Though he wouldn't be so intimidated is Arthur wasn't so attracted to danger all the time and Merlin could just use his magic but someone's father was a magic-hating tyrant so yea, he was a little paranoid. Sometimes I worry about you Merlin. "I'm only saying that'd be quite intimidating, though I can't imagine someone as brave as you would be frightened by such a thing." Mr. I've Been a Swordsman Since I was Four was more than capable of defending himself and he had Merlin so. He had no reason to be afraid.
Still working hard not to trip over shit as he followed Arthur, Merlin smirked at the obnoxious reply. "First off--I'm not a good servant." I mean they both knew Merlin wasn't coordinated or punctual so there was no reason to pretend. "And what makes you so sure I'd be killed that easily? I see you've got a lot of confidence in me." Of course, he was grinning. He didn't have much confidence in him either. Then Arthur suggested that Merlin be more careful so he could be ready if the need be. "Yes, sire," he responded, obnoxiousness in his tone though he did make sure to get a better grip on the crossbow. There was no need to accidentally fire that off. Suddenly, Arthur found something and changed direction. Merlin quickly followed closely behind however he wasn't very convinced that it was a smart move. "Oh, sure, follow the unfamiliar tracks and hope it doesn't feed on human flesh," he muttered, audibly but barely so.

"I'm only saying that'd be quite intimidating, though I can't imagine someone as brave as you would be frightened by such a thing." Despite the fact that it was obvious Merlin was being sarcastic Arthur feigned some surprise at the remark. ”You’re finally learning.”Arthur had been trained his whole life to be a knight. He’d faced all kinds of creatures and people and though it would be a lie to say that he never got nervous, Arthur would never let fear stand in his way from protecting Camelot. A dragon wasn’t something Arthur had ever personally had to deal with (yet) but if (when) he did, he would handle it with the same brash courage which had gotten him through every other problem. That, of course, was something Merlin would never be able to understand. ”First off, I’m not a good servant.” ”You're right. You're the worst I’ve ever had.” Arthur agreed, clearly amused by the running joke. I could go and list all the things which Merlin was incapable of doing but that would make for an extremely long and obnoxious post. If there was anything that was for sure, it was that Arthur didn’t have any confidence in Merlin’s ability to fend for himself. ”What makes you think I’d be killed that easily?” ”Oh, I don’t know. The fact that you’ve had no training, no experience, have no idea how to hold a weapon let alone use one, and hide behind a tree any time anything even moderately exciting happens.” There was something about that combination which to Arthur, didn’t quite spell out odds of survival. Merlin offered another obnoxious agreement and Arthur looked back at him, smirking as he adjusted the bow. ”Merlin, you’re holding it upside-down.” As if he’d needed even more proof for his previous statement. After that, the obnoxiousness died down some, because Arthur was preoccupied trying to find the source of the strange footprints. Merlin had muttered somethingwhich Arthur didn’t catch entirely- however he didn’t need to know what he was saying. ”If we don’t find out what it is now we’re only going to have to come back when my father hears about it.” Seriously, like someone other than Arthur was going to get told to go search the forest for the potentially deadly creature. It really wasn’t a wonder that he was so keen to risk his life. It was practically in his job.. like fifty times. Anyway, Merlin should have been glad they were killing two birds with one stone since he didn’t seem to have been a big fan of the ride out. And despite his uselessness Arthur undoubtedly would have brought him along on the patrol.
