Y There was no such thing as a Perfect Marriage. Gwen knew that more than anyone probably realized. While she and Arthur loved each other beyond reason there were just some things that the two would never see eye to eye about. Gwen was a servant girl from birth, she was used to being taken for granted by royals and serving them without question. It was how she grew to be so patient with other people and so kind. However she was Queen now and she thought that would come with respect. Especially when it came to her husband. Unfortunately that was not the case. While some people probably thought Gwen was over reacting from all the stress of the upcoming tournament, she had every right to yell at Arthur in the privacy of their own chambers. She had been working weeks on the preparation for the three day tournament that her husband just had to host in Camelot. While most royals would have left things for the servants to deal with, that was not how the Pendragons worked. They liked getting involved in things. Well Gwen used to like it until Arthur decided to change the knights’ line-up. While Gwen would have been perfectly okay with it if; one: he asked and two: if this wasn’t the fifth time he changed something. She understood that he was the king and had to deal with things more important than the celebration and ceremony. But enough was enough. She was his wife, not his servant.
“Arthur Pendragon! While you might be King of Camelot, you cannot keep changing things without at least asking me if it is okay. This is the fifth time you had me change something, the tournament starts tomorrow, I can’t keep changing things to your will,” Gwen stated sternly and angrily as she approached her husband in their chambers. Gwen was smart enough not to make a scene in front of other people about such things. She knew that this argument had to wait until they were in private. And so the moment he stepped into the chambers, she had approached him about the situation. “Do you know how stressful this is or do you think that just because your king your word is above everything else?” Okay so yes, Gwen was over reacting now. But let’s be honest Arthur could not last three days in Gwen’s shoes. Having to be a woman and deal with the things she would have to deal with on a normal basis. Gwen had to deal with political things too, had to take care of the servants, make sure everything in the castle was nice and up to date. Of course Arthur had his own responsibilities but when tournaments and ceremonies were around the corner it seemed like Gwen had more on her plate than he did. And well the stress was finally getting to her. Some days she had found herself wishing to be that servant girl once more.
“You know what, I have an idea.” Gwen suddenly stood up from where she was sitting and walked out of the chambers. Surely Arthur would follow her if he wanted to know what she was going to do. Gwen had stormed, elegantly, through the castle and to the Physician’s chambers. Without knocking, she walked in and of course immediately found Merlin. “Merlin, I need you to cast a spell.” Yes, she was severely over reacting at this point. But hey, things were never fun when things were calm in Camelot. All the fun things happened when people jumped to conclusions and over reacted. Obviously.

Despite the fact that Arthur had been participating in tournaments as long as he was able to fight, he’d never hosted one before, and he never realized how much work went into the preparation of it all. It seemed like when he'd father was doing it everything had just magically come together hey wait why werent they using magic now good question I'll blame Merlin okay but really, it was a lot fo hard work. Preparing for the three day tournament was probably one of the most stressful things he’d had to do as king. Besides everything related to the event itself, there was the opening and closing ceremonies, multiple banquets, and of course accommodating for all the people staying in the castle during the span of the week. It didn’t help that every time a tournament like this was held in Camelot there was also some kind of a crazy magic based assassination attempt. And because Arthur was still the head of the knights (a position he had no intentions of giving up until he was physically unable to complete his duties), he still had an obligation to compete regularly (and he had to win because he had to prove himself because he was the king). So, he kind of had a lot on his plate, and it was kind of stressing him out. Arthur didn’t really handle that well, and it usually ended up getting taken out on Gwen or Merlin. Who in turn got stressed out themselves and cracked as was the situation, Arthur discovered, the second he walked into his chambers.
”Arthur Pendragon!” Now, that was something no man ever wanted to hear coming out of his wife’s mouth. Here he'd been expecting time alone with Gwen to talk about something other than the tournament and.. nope. Gwen went on to explain why he needed to get her permission before making changes (although, it was pretty clear that what she actually meant was ‘stop changing things!’) ending by reminding him that the tournament started tomorrow. Apparently they had different definitions of what that meant however. ”Exactly, Guinevere, the tournament starts tomorrow, and we’re still not ready.” He was glad she saw the problem. Actually, he was kind of irritated that he was being yelled at. Of course, Gwen had the right to tell him how she felt in the privacy of their chambers, but that didn’t mean Arthur appreciated what she was saying. He’d made a mistake.. or five.. He thought if anyone would understand it would be Gwen. (Although, Merlin was really much more versed in the making mistakes department, probably should have gone to him) ”I didn’t realize how much I was inconveniencing you.” It was true, Arthur really hadn’t been thinking how things he changed would affect anyone else’s jobs, but of course, this was said with complete sarcasm and in no way apologetically.
”You know what. I have an idea” Curious, Arthur followed her out of the room and towards the physician’s chambers. ”Oh yes, let’s get Merlin involved in this. That always helps.” You know, when it doesn’t make everything at least fifty times worse which happened… Yeah, I can’t think of a time either. Apparently Gwen wasn’t really in a ‘listening and talking things out’ mood (okay, so we knew that already) because she barged into the room without knocking which was extremely un-Gwen-like and Arthur followed. ”Merlin I need you to cast a spell.” ”You can’t be serious.” He looked at her like she was being ridiculous.. which she was. ”You know what, fine. Do what you want. I don’t care. Actually, I think this is a great idea. I’ll enjoy the break I was about to tell you to go take.” Lets face it, it was pretty obvious where Gwen was going with this whole thing, and if she thought doing Arthur’s job was going to be easier, well them she could have it. Arthur was obviously convinced he was getting the better end of the deal.

Merlin, as usual, was enjoying his time in Gaius’s chamber doing absolutely nothing. Objects were floating around him as he lay plopped on a couch (his attention span was easily entertained). He probably should have been cleaning up somewhere or something but he’d been slacking quite a bit lately. It wasn’t like it mattered—now that he could use magic openly simple tasks such as making Arthur’s bed were nothing and he’d have it done in moments when he wanted to. Though his free time was interrupted abruptly as Gwen came rushing in. Coming in without warning was very Arthur-like, though not something he’d expected from Gwen. Merlin, I need you to cast a spell. He looked at her suddenly, raising an eyebrow with curiosity. ”What is it, Gwen? Are you alright?” He’d be completely willing to cast a spell for her though the way this seemed to going it was going to be something Arthur didn’t completely agree with which would cause conflict. Merlin was loyal to both of them but he couldn’t be dragged between them like a tug-of-war rope—that just wasn’t going to work. Merlin wasn’t one to work well under that kind of pressure. And then Arthur followed in clearly frustrated as well. Merlin wasn’t shocked—this tended to happen when they were under pressure. You can’t be serious. ”Well hello to you as well, Arthur.” Like, Merlin was right there. Why don’t we just waltz in and be all shocked that anyone would go to Merlin for help. Yup, that was appreciated. You know what, fine. Do what you want. Okay, so Arthur agreed. Whatever argument they were having had given both of them the same idea. Well that made things easier—at least Merlin wasn’t going to be pleasing one while disobeying the other because let’s face it, Merlin never won when Gwen and Arthur disagreed. ”Will somebody just tell me what I’m doing?” He then caught what Arthur had said about getting a break that had been Gwen’s to take. ”You can’t be serious,” he said, to repeat Arthur’s comment before. He was pretty sure he knew where this was going and he didn’t think it was a good idea. [/style][/style]

Gwen had ignored Arthur’s sarcastic about inconveniencing her. Clearly he wasn’t understanding how much he took for granted from her and from Merlin. “That is exactly what I’m talking about!” Gwen exclaimed after Arthur made a sarcastic comment about going to Merlin and how it ‘always helps’. “You take people who are very close to you for granted and I’m tired of it.” Gwen continued on her way to Merlin’s chambers. Once she was in there, she was greeted by Merlin. Who was so considerate and seemed actually concerned about her. Unlike her husband. Of course Gwen didn’t answer him due to the fact that anything she said would be a jab at Arthur and would probably make things worse. Honestly it was killing her to fight with her husband. All she wanted to do was apologize to him and try to make up for yelling at him. But that wasn’t going to teach him anything. The only thing she could possibly think of is having them switch places and seeing how she was being treated. At least she wasn’t thinking about him and Merlin switching places. That would just be a disaster. Of course Gwen really wasn’t thinking this through and didn’t really realize that she would have to take care of all his responsibilities either. Gwen understood he had them but she was getting sick of him thinking they were more important than hers. Not to mention Gwen was starting to feel like a servant girl all over again. While her life as a servant wasn’t bad, she was Queen now. And she should be treated as such especially by her husband.
Guinevere rolled her eyes dramatically. “I wasn’t going to get a break any time soon and you know it, Arthur,” she spat at him. She turned back to Merlin, giving him her full attention and by default her anger. “Oh I’m completely serious. It would be a nice change of pace for King Arthur to see what it’s like not being king. Being able to boss everyone, including your wife, around.” Okay she was being ridiculous. It wasn’t like Arthur was always like this. But when he was she never said anything. Until now obviously. Gwen had kept her mouth shut for years and so far all it got her was pent up anger. Now she was finally saying something and suddenly she’s the crazy person?! Yeah how she was going about it was crazy. But her concerns and her feelings weren’t. She was a woman though and we all know that women don’t think rationally during extreme emotional duress. “Cast the spell Merlin.” Gwen gave no room for argument in her tone of voice. Was guilt swarming inside of her? Yes. Did she want to apologize to both boys for how crazy she was acting? Yes. Was she going to? No. So it was settled. Merlin was going to cast the spell, they were switching places. And Arthur would be stuck in a woman’s body. Good luck getting used to the corsets. They are a real pain in the ass!

”That is exactly what I’m talking about. You take people who are very close to you for granted and I’m tired of it.” So that’s what this was about. Of course it was. As was mentioned in the later part of Ally’s post, the real problem here was not how Arthur was acting.. but that Gwen was a woman. And she had a woman brain. (SteriotypicalWomanBrainButDontEvenGetMe StartedOnThat) Which was not wired the same way as Arthur’s. There were no two people Arthur respected or cared more about than Gwen and Merlin. Had Arthur not appreciated what they did on a regular basis, you could rest assured they wouldn’t hold the positions they did in the castle or his life. Arthur just didn’t go around expressing his appreciation as much as Gwen apparently wanted him to. He didn’t say it. And sometimes it was hard to tell when he was showing it. Merlin understood how it worked. Merlin didn’t throw fits about being taken for granted. Because he understood Arthur’s unspoken thank yous and that jokes were just that, jokes. He understand that Arthur trusted him and cared about him despite the fact that in the entire time they’ve known each other, Arthur has said it once (in turn with like two million five hundred eighty four insults). Merlin got that. Which is why all this positive narration is about Merlin and not Gwen. Notice that. Not Gwen. (Merlin shoudl really llove when they fight because they both just talk about how awesome he is.) Anyway, Merlin got shit. He also would undoubtedly get the look Arthur was giving him while Gwen complained, which was obviously seeking confirmation on his wife’s craziness.
See? There she went again. ”I wasn’t going to get a break any time soon and you know it, Arthur.” ”Well maybe perhaps if you’d asked for one instead of completely blowing up.” he spat back. Seriously, Arthur was not that unreasonable a human being. Had Gwen told he she couldn’t handle it or needed a break, he’d have gotten Merlin to do it. Seriously. I know you didn’t see that coming. But there was always a plan B. Anyway, not being funny. Being offended and annoyed here. ”I haven’t always been king, Gwen. I do understand how to take an order.” I mean, lets not even start the rant about Uther and his incapability of doing..anything. Yes, Arthur knew that the kinds of orders he’d followed as a knight and prince were very different than the ones Merlin and Gwen had had as servants however he had orders. He sat through things he didn’t want to or see the point of sitting through, enforced laws he didn’t fully support, fought battles that might have not been necessary, and it wasnt like he didn’t know where Gwen was coming from (other than the hormones- man he was a lost cause trying to figure that part out). ”Cast the spell, Merlin.” Well, reason obviously wasn’t going to get Gwen to change her mind on the matter. So Arthur sighed, rolled his eyes, and obviously still not seeing the point of this nodded to Merlin. ”Go ahead. Nothing else is going to get through to her apparently.” Yeah, because talking about her like she wasn’t in the room showed the effort Arthur was making. He wasn’t even thinking about how they were possible going to finish preparations for the tournament or more importantly yet get though the tournament. (He really wasn’t thinking about the fact he was subjecting himself to being a girl.) At this point, he had a point to make and that had basically taken over all his common sense.

So Gwen and Arthur were just kind of going back and forth with their spouse bickering and Merlin just let them go at it. Because, yanno, nobody listened to him so there was no point in trying. He was standing there in hopes that they’d solve the problem amongst themselves, though it became evident that that was not happening. As always, Merlin would be dragged into the problem and it’d become his problem when he messed something up and couldn’t fix it after agreeing to help them. That was always what happened. Being able to boss everyone, including your wife, around. Merlin nodded satisfactorily, though he knew better than to actually agree aloud because Arthur was already pretty heated. And then the pressure was back on Merlin. Cast the spell, Merlin. He glanced at Arthur, looking for approval. Go ahead. Nothing else is going to get through to her apparently. He hesitated, and then asked, ”You…want me to switch you?” He’d never done it before, but he knew how. It was similar to the aging spell, though as the aging spell was, it was complicated and he was probably going to need help getting them back. ”You do realize how much power that requires…” he said with uncertainty, before readying his concentration. ”Fine. You asked for it. Here we go…” He said some shit in Latin (or whatever language it is) and…they looked the same. ”Uh…” He looked at them back and forth. ”Arthur…Gwen? Gwen, Arthur…” He shook his head. ”Did it work? How do you feel?” [/style][/style]

“And then what? You get Merlin to do it, that poor boy does enough for you as it is.” Okay so as established through Tilly and Ally skyping, when Gwen and Arthur fight Merlin gets defended. At least Gwen defends Merlin. But it’s true, as Phips stated in Arthur’s inner monologue. Merlin would have to do the work and Gwen would more than likely feel bad about it. Arthur should know that! Gwen didn’t like handing her responsibilities over to someone, she felt bad about it. And Merlin did a lot of her and Arthur, giving him more things to do was cruel. She looked at him with a ‘are you serious look?’ Before Arthur was King he was Prince. And the only person he took orders from was Uther, the king. Anyone else well… Not to mention they were completely different orders. Arthur wouldn’t know how to muck out the stables while some prat was yelling at you to do a million other things. Or wash clothes, especially his own. But she wasn’t going to bother to dissect every part of this argument. As far as she knew she was getting her way. Of course it was going to blow up in her face later, but then when the couple eventually makes up Merlin will more than likely get blamed for it. And yes nothing else was going to get through to her. She was a stubborn and hormonal woman, for them to get on her level was nearly impossible. Though Arthur should have known that going into this marriage. If he wanted a sane and less hormonal person he should have married Percival or Merlin even. But no, he married her. And now he was stuck with her. Of course Gwen wasn’t this bad on a daily basis; it was just every now and then. Of course it was never like this. Oh well.
“Yes that’s what I want Merlin,” Gwen stated trying not to snap his head off. Was he not listening to their fight? No wonder Arthur rags on him so much. But her fight wasn’t with Merlin and she wasn’t angry at him. Just slightly annoyed. When Merlin brought up how much power it took, Gwen felt a little guilty but just looked at him. Waiting for him to cast the damn spell. “I dunno, did it work?” Gwen questioned looking over to where was. And standing to her was herself. She glanced down and sure enough she was in Arthur’s body. Gwen smiled in satisfaction. “Good job Merlin!” Gwen paused for a moment after full realization sank in. Arthur’s body was hers and so was his voice. “Well then Arthur looks like you have some stuff to be doing as me.” She glanced at him/her and smiled. Wow this was going to get very confusing.

Okay Gwen, you're right. Arthur never had to muck out the stables. Or cook. Or do laundry. And apparently for whatever reason that invalidated his point because there was only ONE type of orders in the world and ONE type of hard work (which was "cleaning"… not risking your life fighting dragons and sorcerers and snakes and immortal knights and your psychopathic sister and bipolar druid kid and I’m not going to continue this list because it would fill up a whole PARAGRAPH). So yeah, Arthur really wasn't appreciated the look that his HORMONAL wife was giving him. Arthur loved Gwen with all his heart and would give up anything for her… but this hormonal thing that happened.. seriously makes a guy question his past decisions. Obviously it wasn’t the couple's first fight and eventually they'd get through it and blame Merlin for everything while they made out because.. that's just how it works. But until then.. apparently there was going to be some gender swapping ridiculousness. Arthur watched Merlin intently as he casted the spell (I mean he was getting used to the whole Merlin sorcerer thing but it was still very.. weird.. to voluntarily be at the other end of a spell) and all of a sudden he felt different. "Good job Merlin!" Now THAT was not something that was supposed to be said in Arthur's voice unless there was a seriously large amount of sarcasm alongside. Examining himself, Arthur made a pretty discontented face and put his hands on his.. her… his waist, bringing them slowely up along the front of her.. his (lets just stop using pronouns now) dress and.. okay, he's a guy, you KNOW where his hands ended up. "How do you breathe in this?" He asked incredulously, gesturing, and again, pretty clear by the Arthur face I can't describe in words that there was no way he was doing this for a long amount of time. (Literally, this was only proving to him more than women weren't humans considering they clearly didn't require a substantial amount of air.) Gwen informed him that he had "things to be doing as her" and he scoffed, heading towards the door. Or, yanno, taking a step towards the door before nearly falling on his face. He caught himself, bunched up the dress in frustration, and took a few more small uncoordinated steps – well aware he looked ridiculous. (MAde sense considering this was the most ridiculous thing he'd ever subjected himself to.) "Come on, Merlin." Yeah, that was an order.

And then what? You get Merlin to do it, that poor boy does enough for you as it is. Merlin nodded his head quickly in confirmation. He showed his hand, touching a finger as he counted his duties. ”Polishing your armor, washing your clothes, making your bed—“ he could have gone on and on but there was a good chance that Arthur would return to his own self eventually after the chance and Merlin didn’t really want to be killed. Things were already bad enough as it was. Both of them were irritable and Merlin was just thrown into the middle of it. Yes that’s what I want Merlin, ”Well it’s not exactly a decision people make every day. There are other ways to fixing problems with your spouse, aren’t there? Maybe talking it out?” He shrugged obnoxiously before succumbing to their ridiculous request and making the switch. Seeing their reactions, it was pretty obvious that he’d done it correctly. Good job Merlin! ”Can you say that again? I didn’t know his voice could say those words.” They started talking to each other and Merlin was clearly amused. How do you breathe in this? ”You look lovely, Sire.” Yea, he was in an obnoxious mood. Come on, Merlin. ”Uuh…” He looked between them quickly before looking at Arthur (who from this moment on will refer to the ACTUAL Arthur in Gwen’s body and vice versa). ”Well, you’re technically not you… I may be her servant….” After thinking about that for a moment he inched his way toward Arthur, figuring after his obnoxiousness this wasn’t a good time to disobey.
