I just can’t believe… all this time… ”I’m sorry,” he apologized again, not all that thrilled with the lack of trust he had produced between himself and Arthur. He didn’t regret keeping it from him, but he wished it hadn’t been a necessary secret. It was never going to be easy to say it. I know… That he didn’t expect. It made him feel much better… just to know that Arthur had a brief understanding of why Merlin had done it. After everything I’ve said about magic, you’ve owed nothing to Camelot. Or to me. That, Merlin expectedly disagreed with. ”You hated the bad magic. Just because you hadn’t experienced the good doesn’t mean you’d have been opposed to it.” Merlin truly believed that. Arthur hadn’t had much reason to think any good could come out of magic. Had he been exposed to a trustworthy sorcerer, he may have had different thoughts. Being much more rational than Uther, he probably would have. Or with Gwaine. Merlin laughed. It didn’t change his answer. ”Not exactly—I’m just surprised you believed the tavern excuse so quickly. Do I look like a drunkard to you?” He asked the question quite amused. ”There’s uuh…” His grin faded slightly. ”Something else you should know. The old man…the sorcerer…” He gave Arthur a goofy, nervous grin. A lot of the tavern excuses had been used while Merlin was running around as Dragoon being ridiculous and getting himself caught. He was kind of insane, obviously. There’s nothing that you aren’t already. Merlin nodded appreciatively, though he did expect the obnoxiousness that followed. Though, I’m certain, once we get back to Camelot, I could come up with a few things. He shrugged. It wasn’t like mere chores were going to be an issue anymore. ”If I can use magic, it won’t be a problem.” [/style][/style]

"You hated the bad magic. Just because you hadn't experienced the good doesn't mean you'd have been opposed to it." "I assumed that there was no good that could come of it. For that I'm at fault." Arthur had never fully believed his father that all magic was bad.. until he had given it a chance, and after that he considered himself no better than Uther had been (except like he hadn't started a war.. okay, he had but Morgana.. not really an option here) "Had I known, I wouldn't have been… I'm not opposed to it." he corrected. When Merlin had first told him, Arthur wasn't quite sure. But as time passed, he began to come to terms with the idea. Of course the fact that it was Merlin helped a lot. Had it been someone else, Arthur wasn't so sure he'd have been as quick to trust, but it was Merlin and aside from Gwen there wasn't a single person he would be so quick to change the rules for. "Do I look like a drunkard to you?" "Only when you wake me up stumbling around my room looking for woodworms." he smirked. Merlin had given him a lot of room to question that sort of thing. Again, they couldn't have their fun moment without another unpleasant one coming to light. "The old man.. the sorcerer.." Arthur looked at Merlin expectantly though as soon as he caught sight of his grin his own face contorted. "Are you kidding me?!" he exclaimed, cringing and gripping Merlin's shoulder for a moment. He couldn't.. The old man had been a nut. He'd caused more problems than anyone Arthur had ever met except for.. ooookay he shouldn't have been surprised by this at all. Not to mention the fact that every time the old man had been there, Merlin had been… oh god the guy should just have been really lucky Arthur wasn't in a position to throw a pot at him or something. "Now I'm fully convinced you're a drunkard" he murmured. It was either that or the mental affliction was worse than they'd ever thought. (okay, it was probably both. there was no other explanation) "If I can use magic, it won't be a problem." "No I don't think you'll be able to use magic for what I have in mind." Pft, like Merlin was just going to get off the hook like that. Not when Arthur was trying to prove a point he wasn't.

I assumed that there was no good that could come of it. For that I’m at fault. Merlin nodded, shrugging slightly. ”You’re also forgiven.” Merlin understood it. And while Arthur wasn’t going to go easy on himself Merlin understood where he was coming from. He’d seen Arthur go through hell because of sorcery. Had I known, I wouldn’t have been… I’m not opposed to it. Merlin raised an eyebrow, actually having a hard time believing it. Just hearing it was unexpected. ”You’re not?” He shook his head, giving it some thought. ”And the rest of Camelot? You’re not the only one who’d been against it.” Just because one person’s perspective changed didn’t mean everyone would just go along with it. It’d take convincing. If Arthur was okay with it, then Merlin’s life wasn’t in as much danger though he still had to worry about others. He wasn’t completely safe. Telling other people wasn’t on his to-do list. Are you kidding me?! Okay, there could have been a better way of going about that confession but Arthur had to know. When Arthur gripped his shoulder Merlin slowed his pace and slowly put Arthur on the ground against a tree before stopping to rest himself. Now I’m fully convinced you’re a drunkard. ”I had to—I had people to protect… and I needed magic to do it.” He stared at the ground with uncertainty. ”He… I didn’t kill your father either. It was Morgana,” he added softly. It was nice finally being able to explain himself. No I don’t think you’ll be able to use magic for what I have in mind. Merlin looked up slowly, a small grin forming on his face. ”And what exactly do you have in mind?” [/style][/style]

"You're also forgiven." "Thank you." Merlin was right, Arthur wasn't going to go easy on himself, but he was glad to know that Merlin didn't blame him (although Merlin really should have) Understandably, the guy seemed surprised when Arthur said that he didn't have a problem wiht magic.. Arthur was almost surprised with himself. "You’re not?" "As long as it is not used to cause harm to the kingdom." Which, again, granted, was sort of an anti-sorcerer bias.. but, again, the bias was with good reason. And anyone who wanted to harm Camelot sorcerer or not was going to have to answer to him. point and case. "And the rest of Camelot? You're not the only one who was against it." "No, but I am the king." It made him a pretty important someone as far as rule making went. "There have always been people who found the magic ban to be cruel. And those who believe it just will simply have to get used to the new way. This is not the first tradition that I've broken. To any change there will be opposition, but what matters is that allowing magic in the kingdom is the right thing to do. If you want credit, its yours to take. If not I would simply say that a sorcerer is the thank for our victory in the war. An alliance was made based on merit, the same as I would give to any man." Of course, that merit generally resulting in knighthood which, I'm sorry Merlin I love you but my go that is not happening now or ever. Anyway Arthur wouldn't reveal Merlin unless that was what he wanted and if it was he was going to ensure that anyone who tried to harm him ende dup with their head chopped off.. Basically, everything would remain as it always was."Okay there could have been a better way of going about that confession" Yeah, yanno what, no shit Sherlock. I don't think there was a worse way you could have come out with that one. Sorry. Being serious now. The whole finding everything all at once out was horrible and upsetting and the position Arthur was in was really just making everything worse. He couldn't help being frustrated by the lack of progress they were making and the little he was able to help as Merlin set him on the ground. And on top of that he suddenly had this giant to do list he involving finding his psychopathic sister and peacefully restoring magic to Camelot.... Yeah. He was exhausted. But there was still so much he needed to do and know and Merlin basically read his mind as far as what was bothering him. "I didn't kill your father. That was Morgana." He nodded, believing him entirely. "Why didn't you tell me.. it was her?" Because we all know Merlin should have done that.. on numerous occasions. And it would have saved everyone a lot of grief and misunderstanding. Arthur smiled back when Merlin finally looked up and asked him what he had in mind. "I think I'll keep that a secret." He was pretty sure he was entitled the leaving Merlin in suspense for a while.

Merlin simply nodded in response to the thanks. He had never been used to accepting credit, but he’d never felt like it was a big deal. As he’d said various times before, he’d only done what anyone else with his abilities would have done. Just as anyone with decent ideals would have understood Arthur’s point of view, and so Arthur wouldn’t hear about it again unless it was in good humor. As long as it is not used to cause harm to the kingdom. So basically everyone except Merlin was forbidden. ”Believe me, that narrows it down.” Most sorcery, admittedly, had been used for harmful reasons. No, but I am the king. Merlin listened to his reasoning, understanding and trusting that Arthur would do anything to protect him if he did tell the people the truth, though he’d preferred to keep that down… at least for the time being. Certainly after hearing that a sorcerer helped them win the war, some opinions would change. ”I don’t need the credit—nor do I want it.” He didn’t want to be all ‘I don’t want the credit because I’d rather not be killed’, but he didn’t want the credit because he’d rather not be killed. Coward or not, that was what he wanted…until Camelot was ready. ”Thank you, though.” Again, the credit thing was new. It was cool at least getting it from Arthur. Even if sometimes the credit wasn’t necessarily a good thing. Killing Uther, even indirectly, wasn’t something he was particularly proud of. Why didn’t you tell me.. it was her? ”Because for a while I believed it was me.” That one took him a few seconds to actually get out. He’d felt miserable for it for a good while. ”Besides… telling you what I knew would’ve led to questions. How’d you find that one out, Merlin? Have you got any proof? The tavern excuse wasn’t going to work for that one.” Yea, he was joking with that last bit, but his tone didn’t reflect that very much. I think I’ll keep that a secret. ”Perhaps I should quit the job while I’m ahead.” That one sounded slightly more obnoxious. [/style][/style]

"Hello Gwaine."
"Morgana."
The corner of his lip turned up as she flashed him a look of calculated irritation. He'd be hearing it from Percival later. It had been a stupid plan. They'd laugh about it over a few pints.
--
"Tell me where Arthur is."
"You should know me better by now. I don't plan on making this that easy for you."
Shockingly.. those weren't the words the evil psychopathic sorceress was looking for.
--
Gaius had said that the nathair tortures its victims just past the point of human endurance, eventually driving them mad with agony. Gwaine thought it was a load of bullshit. If he ever got out of this alive, he'd have to apologize to Gauis. He was right.
--
"It seems you need a little more motivation. Perhaps things would run more smoothly if I removed your friend from the picture."
"No."
Percival was a few feet away tied up. Arthur, hopefully by now, near the other end of the forest with Merlin. He'd figure something out. He'd save them both.
"Then you will tell me what I want to know."
"They're headed to Avalon."
The snake bit him again and all Gwaine could think was that whatever kind of afterlife there was for knights who'd committed the highest act of treason.. he'd be there soon.
--
"How do you know I didn't lie to you?" Morgana didn't so much as bat an eyelash. It was not Gwaine's first attempt at a distraction. Nor was it his second.. third.. or ninth. "Percival could have an army marching after you as we speak— there army could already be waiting there. Or there might just be a giant sinkhole." Okay, it was true, at this point, Gwaine was pretty much trying again. Anything that might slow them down, buy Arthur and Merlin some more time. "You know if you wanted to kiss me all you had to do was ask." They stopped. Gwaine smirked victoriously. It lasted until the nathair was sinking into his skin again. That note about Gaius being right.. he took that back. He was pretty sure he was starting to build up a tolerance.
--
"I think we passed that tree already." He wasn't even sure how the words were managing to come out of his mouth— let alone form any sort of coherent thoughts in his head. (Maybe they weren't. Maybe he was just imagining the whole thing.) Everything hurt. From his toes to his head. Even his hair hurt. He freaking hair. And Morgana was sparing them no favors going through the forest. He'd started coughing up blood a few minutes ago but he was still talking so, he supposed it could have been worse. Merlin could have been dead, Percy could have been dead.. With that in mind, Gwaine forced himself to stay alert. "Avalon is most certainly in the other direction."
--
Phips figured she should actually write something mildly relevant now so, eventually, despite Gwaine's best attempts, tthey did catch up with Merlin and Arthur. They heard them, apparently before the same could be said in reverse. Gwaine attempted to speak—say anything, so that they might have a chance to get out of there, but Morgana was a step ahead of him, silencing him completely by force and gripping him tightly to keep from moving. He struggled, but between Morgana's magic and the fact he could hardly tell which side was up.. there wasn't much he could do but glare and wait.
He tried to listen to their conversation (he was nosy— he supposed, because it wasn't like what they were talking about was in any way going to help them out of this mess) though he understood very little about what they were talking about. Morgana seemed to have a much better graps of the subject because before long she was cutting in. Because for a while I believed it was me." (Okay the rest of the bold in this post is Morgana because I had no idea idea of how to differentiate between things.) "Do give yourself more credit Emrys— you played a very important part in killing the monster who'd driven magic out of the land." Finally she walked into plain sight, smiling sweetly (in an entirely sadistic way) at Merlin. "In fact I couldn't have done it without you." With her free hand she sent a blast knocking Merlin against a tree some distance away. She stood over her brother. "Arthur, you look terrible." No amount of falsified pity could mask the complete glee in her tone. "I almost didn't make it in time.. Luckily your little birdy was easy to make talk." With assistance from magic she had Gwaine lifted up from his collar, better showing off her prize. Though there were tons of quips he could have thrown out to ease the tension, faced with his own mistake Gwaine only lowered his head, unable to look either of them in the eye.

Merlin had been worried about the possibility of being found if they didn’t keep moving though Arthur wasn’t going to last as long if he didn’t get breaks every now and then. They were barely moving at a decent speed and understandably they were both exhausted. If they’d had like two more minutes Merlin would have been getting them moving again but apparently that was too late. Merlin hadn’t explained any of this to anyone—and here Morgana was suddenly answering him. As soon as he heard her voice, he jerked his head up and moved defensively in front of Arthur. Do give yourself more credit Emrys— She would. She would blame him for Uther’s death. He’d been trying to convince himself that it wasn’t his fault since the moment it happened. As soon as Morgana appeared, Merlin raised a hand to hurt her though he quickly stopped. She had Gwaine and he looked at least as bad as Arthur did. His hesitation before deciding to hit her lasted too long and Merlin was thrown back into a tree. He didn’t even have a response to her because he couldn’t think of a good enough defense for himself. He collected himself as quickly as he could, looking over to see Morgana standing next to Arthur. ”Get away from him.” He glanced over at Gwaine as Morgana was more than happy to explain how she’d found them. That concerned Merlin… only because if Gwaine talked she’d done a hell of job on him. When Morgana lifted him into the air, Merlin (with help from magic) got closer to Gwaine and started chanting, trying to take control over Gwaine from Morgana. He wasn’t exactly focused though—having Gwaine and Arthur to worry about at once. Morgana ruined everything and he wanted to kill her. As soon as he got the chance, it was happening, but he wasn’t going to do it while it risked hurting one of the other two. [/style][/style]

"Get away from him." "As you wish." Morgana turned her attention back at Merlin. "I did not come here to hurt him. I only came to watch." It wasn't hard to believe her. Because she was a sadistic psychopath.. and Gwaine certainly didn't need to say anything for them all to know that was the truth. Really, she demonstrated herself quite well. Morgana was truly in the better position, because she didn't need to do anything to any of them. In time both Arthur and Gwaine woul die. it was simply killing Emrys, which, as far as Morgana was concerned, would pose no problem. Clearly she was thinking a little too highly of herself.
Gwaine looked up slightly when Merlin started chanting (great, they were having a magical tug of war) though as soon as Morgana caught on she pulled Gwaine closer to her, placing one of her hands around his neck. "I don’t think you want to do that, Emrys. It might not be Arthur's destiny to die by my hand but I have no problem finishing off this one. I've actually been wanting to for quite a long time."
"Charming, as always." Gwaine crooned, whether it was for himself or for Merlin's sake, trying to sound much better than he felt. "But I'm afraid you'll have to take a number." He'd been antagonizing her since she first captured them. It would be a terrible time to slack off. He looked at Merlin with resolute, knowing what had him hesitating. "Do it."

I did not come here to hurt him. I only came to watch. Merlin was less than amused. ”Then I suppose you’ll be disappointed.” He wasn’t letting her touch Arthur… or Gwaine as long as he could gain control over the situation. Merlin wasn’t able to try to get Gwaine for long before Morgana got him into a threatening position. The chanting immediately stopped as Morgana put a hand around his neck and Merlin froze, his eyes fixed on Gwaine’s neck. She implied that she would kill him and Merlin knew she wasn’t bluffing. As always, Gwaine attempted to sound perfectly content though it was clear that he was not okay so Merlin really wanted to get him away from Morgana. Do it. He glanced back at Arthur quickly before looking back at Morgana. With a flash of his eyes, a fire appeared on the arm she had on Gwaine’s neck, close enough to her hand to get her to jerk it but far enough from Gwaine’s face to not burn him. Morgana could easily fix that small problem, but it bought Merlin enough time to magically pull Gwaine over to him and lift a hand to knock Morgana to the ground. He quickly ran to Arthur, picked up the sword, and approached her with it. He needed to be fast, but with the amount of confidence the woman had in her ability to evade death, Merlin did have a little time. He knew she didn’t know about the sword. He didn’t even make time to explain himself—he just needed to do it. Despite the fact that it was Morgana, he wasn’t crazy about directly killing anyone in he first place so he acted on instinct. He lifted the sword above her abdomen, shut his eyes, and forced it downward. Certainly by that moment she knew what kind of sword it was. He backed up slowly, turned to Gwaine and Arthur, and ran to Gwaine, doing the best healing job he could do with his knowledge (he couldn’t do anything more to help Arthur and Gwaine was also in a position in which he was just going to need to rest it off). He was silent other than the spells he cast and the following instructions. ”Stay still and keep your head up,” he said, getting Gwaine against a tree and sitting between him and Arthur, dragging his hand down his face. Gwaine and Arthur both watched carefully, as uncomfortable as Merlin was with the little they could do, though the trusted Merlin with their lives. Gwaine knew that Morgana would hold true on her wish kill him, but it would be a worthwhile death if it enabled Merlin and Arthur to make it out alright. Merlin, however, seemed to have different plans. Gwaine's eyes widened as the sorceress's arm caught on fire. Before he could do anything he was being moved with magic (again) and Morgana's bonds were lifted. He quickly pushed himself up so that he could see what was happening, catching Arthur look away as Merlin stabbed Morgana. Having no sympathy for the bitchhe was relieved. With the threat gone he relaxed, having no intentions of moving.. like again ever.. though Merlin was quickly over him. It was evident the kid was shaken so he again did his best to assure him the only way he knew how.. yeah apparent his "taking thigs seriously" literlaly did only last one post. "Fire, eh? Again? Im starting to see a pattern with you." Merlin helped him against a tree and Gwaine turned to the side just in time to spit out more blood and what he figured must have been snake venom. "Stay still and keep your head up." He wiped his mouth and waved away the concern. "M'fine, m'fine-- get back to your prince charming." Laying his head against the tree he smirked at Merlin before turning his attention to Arthur. "Before you say it, I know. Don't chase after evil sorcerers alone on a whim. Yes sire." Yes, Gwaine felt awful about what he did, however, now that the crisis was averted.. he was pretty much able to be obnoxious about it despite the fact that they were still in a pretty shitty position.
