Arthur picked at the last of his food, listening to his father go on (and on and on and on) about the importance of a patrol which had been sent out this morning because druids were spotted in the forests outside the lower ring (and consequently how horrible druids were and how horrible magic was and how fortunate they were that in the last few years Camelot had begun to see peace – all of which were very true concepts in Arthur’s head, however nothing he hadn’t heard already a hundred times and couldn’t repeat in perfect quotes). His father hadn’t been busy (for once) and so he’d insisted that they ate together, however by the time Uther was done with the lecture Arthur was getting antsy and really wanted to go outside. He’d asked for permission to be excused, assuring his father that he’d completed his training and all his other duties, and would stay out of the way of the counsel in the evening, and then silently kicking his legs under the table, awaiting his confirmation.
Of course, there were standard questions he was asked, all of which he responded to with perfectly appropriate and well-rehearsed answers. ”Yes, Father. I won’t leave the castle. Morgana will come too.” That always seemed to do it. Uther was very hesitant to let him go running around the castle alone, but in the company of Morgana, he was usually able to be granted some leeway. It was obvious that Uther cared for the girl deeply and wanted to him to spent time with her however Arthur didn’t understand why his father seemed to trust Morgana more than him (I mean- yes, she was a few years older, but she was a girl, so it wasn’t really like she could do much). None the less, for some reason he did, and Arthur was very aware of how to use it to his advantage. Arthur bowed his head politely before turning and walking out of the room. Now, all he needed to do was convince Morgana to come along on his little adventure.
Yes, Arthur actually planned on spending time with Morgana. He was encouraged to make friends with the nobles’s sons, but most of them were much older than him and the ones who weren’t were extremely boring and stuck up. Morgana was hardly the most fun person in the world, but at least she was willing to run around the palace and spar and things.. when she wasn’t too busy brushing her doll’s hair or trying on dresses or something else positivity girly and ridiculous. He supposed the fact that she was Uther’s ward and in a way like his sister made her more willing to partake in teasing and general shenanigans.. and he was glad that she was around, because he really didn't have any other options. As soon as he was out of the company of the guards Arthur hurried to Morgana’s room, opening the door without knocking as was clearly a bad habit. ”Morgana you’re obviously not doing anything fun in here so do you want to-“ he stopped himself, looking at the girl who most definitely was not Morgana with a curious, confused expression. ”You’re not Morgana.." Okay, so he needed to point out the obvious. The girl looked around his age and obviously not very imposing but that still didn't explain what she was doing there. "Who are you?”

Gwen was just the blacksmith’s daughter, nothing more. She was working on taking care of her younger brother and practice her sewing skills. Nothing more. Well until one day she met the Lady Morgana and the two hit it off right away. There was just something about the other girl that made young Gwen feel alive. She was bold and confident. Nothing like Gwen. And somehow Morgana managed to convince Uther to make Gwen her hand-maiden…or servant as her brother often called her. Well she was a servant in training. All she really did was clean Morgana’s room and run errands. When she got a little older, the girl was promised a full time job as Morgana’s servant. Something Gwen was thrilled about because the girls really were friends. At least they treated each other more like friends than master and servant. Gwen wouldn’t have it any other way to be honest. Morgana was the missing piece to Gwen’s life. She had been around her father and brother for so long that a female was extremely welcomed in her. That being said, Gwen and the Lady Morgana didn’t spend every moment together. Obviously the other girl had things to do, like royal things to do. Things Gwen wouldn’t be able to help out with until she was older. Which was fine with her, she wanted to keep her head down for as long as possible really. Her timid nature made her that way on a daily basis.
The servant woman that was helping Gwen train had only one thing for Gwen to do today. Since today was one of those days that Morgana would be somewhere else doing things only a king’s ward did at her age. She had ordered her to put away Morgana’s new clothes and jewelry, then she was free to leave for the day. Gwen was happy to go home to see her brother. She didn’t like being away from him for too long, after all her father was too busy to look after him and their mother was dead. That left Elayon in Gwen’s care. Not to mention Gwen was looking forward to having the day off to practice some sewing. With her dainty hands, Gwen stacked the two big baskets on top of each other and carried them up the stairs to Morgana’s chambers. She managed to carefully make it to the room without dropping anything. Smiling proudly at herself, she put the baskets down on the table near the door. Sighing, she straightened out her hand-me-down dress before turned to the first basket and began putting the clothes away. The silk felt nice against her skin. It would be so awesome to wear something like this one day. Gwen managed to get through all the clothes without any incidences. Of course that did not happen with the jewelry.
She was half way through sorting out the bracelets and the necklaces when the doors opened. Gwen grinned, expecting to see Morgana, she turned around and found Prince Arthur standing before her. Shocked, she dropped the jewelry from her hands and backed up into the table. Knocking over the rest of the jewelry. “No, I’m not. I’m sorry, sire.” She quickly bowed her head, feeling her cheeks heat up. “G-G-G-Guinevere, sire,” she managed to stammer out. Gwen noticed the jewelry on the ground and began to feel more panic set in. Oh no, no, no, no. “I’m sorry, Morgana is out at the moment my lord. I’m just her servant, I was putting away her things. I’m sorry to disappoint you with my presence. If you want, I can go send word to milady that you are looking for her.” She knew she was rambling, and she knew that it didn’t make much sense, but she couldn’t stop. Gwen had managed to overcome her nervousness around Morgana and the other servants. But she had never actually met Arthur in person so she didn’t exactly get the opportunity to work on her courage with him.

It was obvious that the girl who was not Morgana was as surprised to see Arthur as Arthur was to see her. Of course, that was to be expected. I mean, Arthur was the price of Camelot after all. (Or would be crowned it, technically speaking, when he was older.) Whoever this girl was, she was not a noble or anyone Arthur recognized from the palace, and so he had no reason to know who she was. He nodded when she gave her name, and an explanation of what she was doing there, although he was more distracted by her nervousness and rambling.. He didn’t respond until she apologized for not being Morgana.. like that was her fault. ”No.. it’s alright. I was just surprised to find you here.” he explained. ”Morgana didn’t tell me she had a new servant.” Morgana was supposed to tell him these things because.. she was supposed to. That was why. Because when she didn’t then he walked into her room and these kinds of misunderstandings happened. So it was obviously all Morgana’s fault. (This girl was strange.) ”It’s important that nobody who isn’t supposed to be here gets in the castle.” Arthur sounded particularly over confident about the way he handled a situation, obviously expected that had Guinevere been some sort of enemy of Camelot, he would have been able to handle the situation. It turned out she was not though, and so all was well.
Well, all was well except that Morgana was out and Arthur didn’t want to spend the rest of the day alone. He could have taken Guinevere’s offer to send for her, but there was really no point. Whatever she was doing was probably more interesting (for her) than running around the castle. However.. Arthur did have another idea. A good one, actually. ”I was going to see if she wanted to do something. But since she’s busy... I suppose... you could come instead.” Arthur sounded a little uncertain of himself.. I mean.. she was a servant... and a girl. It wasn’t that Arthur was trying to be rude to her- he really just didn’t know better. Not having much interaction with other kids or anything, Arthur never really got a chance to grasp the whole manners concept. Like, how it might have been better if he asked her if she wanted to play with him.. or maybe, made it sound slightly less like she was a second choice. But that was the reality of it. She couldn’t have been his first choice because he just met her two seconds ago and of course she would want to go with him- who wouldn’t? So, he didn’t realize any of these things .. but he did take another look at the jewelry on the floor and realize that was had been sort of kind of busy when he walked in on her. ”I mean, I’m sure Morgana could put away her own necklaces... or whatever those are.” And now she had no reason to say no so the plan was perfect again.

Gwen admired the little boy; he had confidence and would surely make for a great king. If he ever learned to get off his high horse. But obviously Gwen wasn’t going to say that to his highness over here. The girl really wanted to point out that Uther was the one Morgana answered to, not Arthur. But she wasn’t going to do that. “It may have slipped her mind, my lord. As the king’s future ward she has a lot going on.” For a ten year old, Gwen was pretty wise beyond her years and this was solely due to raising her brother on her own; and learning that life wasn’t easy for everybody. But that never made her bitter and wary towards people that were more fortune than her. So she wasn’t trying to be mean or rude to Arthur. Obviously, this was Guinevere. She was just trying to be nice and not give this guy the wrong impression of her. Even though he wasn’t doing the same for her. “Of course, that’s why we have knights. And they are doing a fine job, sire.” Like it was Arthur who was responsible for the knights and their behavior. Of course, it would be in the near future but not now. Though Gwen was once again trying to not anger the future king.
Second choice? Nobody should ever feel like a second choice even if it was the case. You just don’t say those things to people. “No,” Gwen spat with slight anger. A few seconds later her situation sank in. She shook her head and quickly recovered herself. “I mean… I wouldn’t want to bother you, being your second choice and all. My lord.” She smiled at him kindly before kneeling down and began picking up the mess she made. She hoped he would take that answer and leave. That was not the case however because the prince decided to speak again. Gwen let out a chuckle at his next comment. “Yes, I’m sure Lady Morgana is perfectly capable of doing that herself but then what would be the point of having a servant?” She smiled once again at Arthur has she put the jewelry and the table and began untangling them. Okay so not all of these were necklaces. Some were bracelets, some were earrings. Others well…Gwen never seen some of these things before. Then again she wasn’t royalty, therefore had no money for such things or need to wear such things. Guinevere began moving about the room, humming, and putting away things. She assumed Arthur had left by now to find Morgana or one of his other friends. Surely he had loads of those. Other kings’ kids or knights’ kids. Then again there was a magical war going on at the moment so she could understand if he didn’t get out much. Guinevere glanced over when she felt eyes on her. “Are you sure you don’t want me to go get Morgana, sire? It wouldn’t be much trouble.”

“It may have slipped her mind, my lord. As the king’s future ward she has a lot going on.” Well, Guinevere was clearly very loyally bound to Morgana, which would have been a good thing did Arthur and Morgana not argue over almost everything. ”What do you know about being the king’s ward?” Arthur asked pointedly. Obviously, he took the comment as an implication he did not understand what responsibilities Morgana had, which he obviously did. While he understood that Morgana considered this girl a friend (why he was not so certain of), it would do her well to remember that Arthur had known her longer, and the two of them had much in common (UghThatsKindaPainfulToTypeStupidLittleArthur) Arthur took a deep breath, trying to have a civil conversation with this girl, but she was just being so disagreeable (okay, so he started the disagreeableness but.. stupid little Arthur, don’t ask me to justify this ridiculousness) . ”Yes.. they are..” he agreed, when she praised the knights of Camelot. Of course they were doing a fine job, they were the best knights in the whole kingdom. Arthur liked to think that he had something to do with them, like he would in the near future, but for now it was kind of like playing pretend.
”No.” Arthur narrowed his eyes at her tone, responding tersely ”Why not?” Rather than answering honestly (it was obviously she wasn’t answering honestly) the girl mentioned something about bothering him being his second choice.. Obviously, had Arthur not wanted to do something with her, he wouldn’t have asked her. Arthur was ne of those people who meants what he said and said what he meant… So Gwen was both right and wrong in her observations. ”I never said you were my second choice.” Arthur replied, before realizing that he kind of had. He threw his hands up exasperatedly. ”Well five minutes ago I didn’t know who you were.” I mean, really, how was he supposed to make plans with someone he’d never seen before and had no reason to believe he’d run into? It wasn’t like he was a psychic or anything. He didn’t understand what this girl wanted from him. It was frustrating, but at the same time, kind of intriguing. Just the fact that she wasn’t beside herself at an opportunity to stop working and hang out with him set her apart from most people Arthur knew, and she certainly had a mind of her own. Arthur didn’t really like it.. but it was a challenge and he wasn’t going to walk away now without getting what he wanted. He couldn’t argue the purpose of having a servant to Guinevere because she was right, so he remained silent, watching her as she moved around the room, humming and putting things away. There was something very intriguing about her alright. Finally she turned her attention back on him and asked again if he’d like her to get Morgana. Ignoring her question, Arthur tried a different approach. ”Has Morgana given you a tour of the citadel yet?”

“Very little, sire. I just know that she has a lot of responsibilities. Surely something was bound to slip her mind, she is only human. My lord.” Gwen wasn’t understanding why Arthur was having such an attitude with her. She wasn’t doing anything wrong. She was being a loyal servant and trying to stick up for Morgana in the most submissive way possible. She wasn’t implying that Arthur didn’t understand Morgana’s position. She was just simply stating that Morgana had a lot on her plate. And any normal human would forget do something as simple as meet up with their pseudo brother. Even if he was the prince of Camelot. She was only human, to Gwen’s knowledge. Surely Uther would have nothing to do with her if she was tied to magic. It was just a ridiculous thought to think someone that close to Uther would be a magical being. He was the king of Camelot for a reason, he should know when a magical being is right under his nose. Unless Morgana was just that good at hiding herself from not only the king but Gwen as well. Well at least Morgana was nice to Gwen and wasn’t giving her an attitude. Surely Arthur was just being defensive because she caught him off guard and would eventually lighten up.
Or not. “I fear I can answer that question without offending you my lord. And I would really like to avoid that.” Gwen tried to say it in a sweet tone. She didn’t want to get in trouble with Arthur. But it was all true. She couldn’t say that he was being rude and acting like a prat without hurting his feelings. And it seemed like he was a sensitive man about his pride and such. Being called out by a small girl like her was not something a male like Arthur particularly liked. Plus he was royalty, he could put her in the stocks and that was something she deeply wanted to avoid. “You’re right you didn’t use those exact words, sire.” She wasn’t about to educate Prince Arthur about what to say and what not to say to people. It wasn’t her job. She was a servant girl, Morgana’s servant girl. Frankly she really had no right to even speak to him like she was, but Gwen couldn’t stop. Someone needed to tell the Great Arthur Pendragon no. Might as well be a nobody like Gwen. She didn’t comment on his statement about not knowing her. Once again it wasn’t her job to educate him on how to talk to people regardless if you knew them or not. Even if they are your second choice you surely don’t act like it. It was rude and inconsiderate, no matter whom they were. But once more, Gwen was in no position to say these things. Guinevere was slightly caught off guard by his new attitude and tone. It was like he was two different people. To be fair she did surprise him in the beginning. “Not…um, properly, no.” Gwen was just starting out as a servant. She only knew a few routes here and there. Back ways to get to Morgana’s room, the kitchens, and the servant areas. She wasn’t a good enough servant to see the rest of the citadel. Like the throne room, Arthur’s room, the library, and all those places. She was still training after all. “I don’t think I’m allowed certain places without the King’s permission.” She wasn’t sure how roaming around the castle worked. She was just told by one of the servants to only go to certain places until she was officially dubbed Morgana’s servant girl. Which would hopefully be soon.

Normally defending Morgana would put Gwen in both Arthur and his father's good graces, but right now Morgana wasn't exactly at the top of the list of Arthur's favorite people.. and therefor neither was the person attempting to justify her actions. Arthur was aware that as Morgana's servant and.. friend or.. whatever it was the two of them were, she would have an obligation to say such things, but that didn't give Arthur any more of an obligation to be nice to her. "Well hopefully nothing else slipped her mind." he muttered, almost under his breath. Though he'd been taught never to speak ill or the king's ward or anyone who held such positions he was a cheeky little kid.. he had the thoughts and he wasn't going to keep them to himself. "Of course.. Though it's not exactly becoming." And neither was like eighty percent of the stuff that came out of Arthur's mouth but that's not important right now shush. "It's lucky she didn't forgot something more important." Like had she forgotten to meet Uther.. that would have been a big deal. Except apparently Morgana was allowed to screw up and defy him and try to kill him and stuff and still be accepted back with open arms. Anyway no one likes Morgana (okay no one likes her like like .. fifteen years) and she's not here right now so we're going to stop talking about her. It wasn't very hard to do considering Gwen was probably the strangest child he'd ever met. Telling someone that you couldn't say something without offending them was basically offending them and Gwen was right, Arthur really didn't like being offended. However, the way she danced around the subject.. and how genuinely she said she didn't want to offend him, made Arthur very curious about what it was she was going to say. "I want to know." he replied, slightly hesitantly though very resolute about it. Like I said, Arthur didn't TRY to be a horrible person (okay, every once in a while he did because it was funny but again he was a cheeky little boy what do you expect) and he really honestly hadn't meant to offend Gwen by calling her a second choice. He didn't have any intentions of admitting that out loud, but he was trying to be slightly more careful in his next offer. She confirmed that she hadn't been properly showed around the castle and he nodded. "Would you like one?" Again, it sounded a little awkward, but he was trying. "I don't think I'm allowed certain places without the king's permission." "Nobody will give you a problem if you're with me. You'll need to learn where things are eventually anyway." I mean, it only seemed practical. Obviously there were still places she wasn't allowed to be, like the dungeons and those underground rooms with magic things locked up, but Arthur technically wasn't supposed to go to any of those places either. And considering that he was young and believed everything his father said about magic being dangerous Arthur didn't really have any desire to go to them.

Gwen paused when she caught something Arthur had muttered, she couldn’t exactly hear what he said but it couldn’t have been good. At least she was assuming it couldn’t be good. Arthur seemed like a little cheeky child so obviously it was a snarky comment. But the small girl would breeze past her because there was zero point in arguing with the Prince. He was royalty for one and he seemed to think everything he said was right. Which okay when it came to Merlin, Arthur was pretty much right the majority of the time. However Merlin was not in the room and he was being a little prat. Again Arthur stated another insult of some type about Morgana. Again Gwen felt compelled to stand up for her lady and friend but he was royalty and basically saying what she wanted to say was pretty much a big no-no. “Well neither is eighty percent of things you are saying, my lord,” Gwen muttered quietly under her breath. It was one of those moments where she just said things and kind of regretted it a moment later. So she was just going to hope that she said it quiet enough for him to not hear her. “I’m sorry my lord, that was out of place and I shouldn’t have said that. I am terribly sorry.” Okay so the guilt of saying something to a royal like him kind of ate away at her and now she felt bad for saying it. Was the statement false? No. But it was rude and Gwen didn’t like being rude no matter who the person was. She just nodded at the next thing he said, too scared to actually allow herself to speak at this point. Gwen just stapled her lips shut, figuratively speaking of course. They didn’t have actual staples during this time. And that would be painful anyways! And then he opened another can of worms. Well technically Gwen opened the can and tried very hard to close it but Arthur was just not having any of that nonsense. “No you don’t, I assure you. Please don’t make me say it.” Gwen really didn’t want to tell the young prince that he was acting like a brat and pretty much needed to be knocked off his high horse. He was being nice now and Gwen was actually feeling guilty thinking about it. But Arthur did act like a prat not just to her but to other people in the kingdom as well. Gwen had seen it while she walked around the very few places she’s allowed in the castle and the castle grounds. But right now he was actually being nice, after implying that she was his second choice and pretty much would prefer Morgana to be here instead of her. But you know, she wasn’t exactly in the right place to say no again. “S—sur—sure!” Gwen exclaimed, she had hoped her early behavior wouldn’t cause problems on this tour. Like oh yea we are going on a tour, here’s the kitchens, here’s the throne room, oh and here’s the dungeon, your new home for insulting the prince. Yup, that’s pretty much where Gwen’s mind was going. “Thank you, Prince Arthur.” Gwen courtesies at Arthur’s offer. And it was true the girl would have to know where things were eventually. But she was still pretty sure this was a ruse to get her to the dungeons without a fight. “After you.” She gestured towards the door, slightly nervous. Not just because it of the dungeon but because she was getting a tour of the castle from Uther’s child. Yea that was a big deal, even if Gwen technically didn’t fancy Arthur in that way. At least not at this moment in time.
