Finally. Arthur wasted no more time than he absolutely had to lingering around after the discussion was over. Someone had requested a meeting with the king in regards to the relationship between their land and Camlot and of course, that meant that Arthur’s attendance had been required. Sometimes Arthur thought his greatest achievements were being able to get through such boring assemblies without falling asleep. While he understood their importance he didn’t see what purpose he had there- because Uther was going to do what he wanted regardless of how stupid and irrational he found it anyway.
Getting back to his room, the first thing Arthur did was change out of his formal attire and into something more suitable for their trip. He packed the necessities (because yes, Arthur was perfectly capable of packing his own things – he just rather enjoyed watching Merlin do it). Speaking of which, here he was.. with a perfectly good excuse to leave the castle.. and Merlin was nowhere to be found. Actually, thinking about it, he hadn’t seen Merlin all morning. (Which was kind of refreshing seeing as that means it had been at least twelve hours since the last time someone was in imminent danger.. and since he’d last been called a clotpole.)
Of course, aside from with him there was only one other place in the castle that the idiot should have been (note the use of ‘should have’ and not ‘could have’, because we all know someone’s too nosy for their own good). Walking quickly and thankful avoiding interruptions (he theoretically had nothing to do today but that was always incredibly subject ot change) Arthur swung open the doors leading to Gaius’s ward. Sure enough, there he was. ”Merlin! Do you know how to tell time?” Obviously not, considering his track record for being late. ”You were supposed to be in my chambers nearly an hour ago. Never mind it though. There’s been a change of plans. Pack your things and meet me in the stables." Turning to walk out of the room he added, ”And hurry up this time!”

Sometimes he just completely lost track of the time. Okay, he did that like twice a day, but he couldn’t help it! He didn’t know why. Often it was because he would sit at the table and use his magic while Gaius wasn’t there to tell him otherwise—this particular time included. It wasn’t as if he needed to be with Arthur right on time—his jobs were never a matter of great importance. If Arthur had to go five minutes without telling Merlin to polish something or pick something up then he would certainly live. However being late for nearly an hour was not something Merlin had meant to do. Many objects came crashing to the floor as the doors came open without warning. Merlin! Do you know how to tell time? Merlin simply looked at him with a suspicious look, unable to answer him before he continued. You were supposed to be in my chambers nearly an hour ago. Never mind it though. There’s been a change in plans. ”What do you mean there’s been a change in—“ Pack your things and meet me in the stables. ”How am I supposed to pack? Where are we going?” He asked with confusion though he didn’t expect a full answer because Arthur liked to think that he could know things that nobody else could. And hurry up this time! ”Well good morning, Arthur,” he retorted with snark, getting up from his chair to go and collect what he thought he might have needed since the knowledge he had in that area was nonexistent. He ran around grabbing things for a few moments until Arthur had turned his back, at which time some belongings of his came flying into a small bag that he put over his shoulder. He then rushed out toward the stables to catch up with Mr. Royally Impatient. Because he hadn’t taken long he wasn’t far behind and when he caught up with Arthur, he spoke again. ”Where on earth are you dragging us off to?”

The crash he’d heard as he opened the door stopped Arthur before he could speak. The prince looked around the room suspiciously, eyeing some still rattling objects before looking up at Merlin. ”What were you doing?” Merlin started rattling off his own questions as Arthur ordered him to get ready (because simply just following orders was obviously too complicated for some people). Arthur actually happened to have a very good reason to believe that Merlin knew things nobody else could. I mean- he seemed to manage it on a regular basis. Not bothering with any of his questions or remarks, Arthur walked out of the room, not getting very far before the other guy caught up with him. So he did know how to hurry up. ”Where on earth are you dragging us off to?” ”We’re going hunting.” he answered simply, and then added as if he were talking to a child ”We do that in the forest.” Entering the stables, Arthur was pleased to find that the horses had already been prepared for them and the servant who did it was gone. He continued, ”You will not breathe a word of this to my father. He believes Gillard and Percival are accompanying us.” Since Nimueh had started trying to kill them on a regular basis, Uther had been unquestionably strict about Arthur not leaving the castle grounds without the company of the knights. Arthur was no coward though. He’d single handedly (okay, with Merlin’s help but he didn’t know that) saved Camelot at least like five times now. He didn’t need an escort to go hunting like five miles past their border. Glancing at Merlin he realized he likely (per usual) had no idea what he was doing. ”Have you rode before?”

Arthur gave Merlin a look that Merlin was very used to getting. What were you doing? "Nothing," he answered quickly. "You scared me with your considerate barging in. I knocked them off the table," he said, eying the objects on the floor before diverting his attention back to Arthur. They got to the stables and Merlin looked at the horses with uncertainty. We're going hunting. Of course they were. Because that sounded like something Merlin looked like he was good at. "Hunting? What good will I be?" There was no reason for Merlin to have to go hunting other than for Arthur's amusement. He ignored the forest comment because he just wasn't going to get Arthur to stop being obnoxious so there was no need to humor him. You will not breathe a word of this to my father. Great, something else to be dragged into. Merlin was practically defying the king on a daily basis just for Arthur alone. "Won't I? Your father hates me enough as it is." If Uther were to find out about this he'd give Arthur shit but he'd give Merlin more than shit for condoning it. Then Arthur asked if Merlin had ridden a horse before. "Oh, yeah, loads of times." He awkwardly tried to get up onto a horse and it didn't work out very well. "No, never."

”Nothing. You scared me with your considerate barging in. I knocked them off the table.” Not completely buying it, Arthur looked at the mess again and then at Merlin. Whatever.. he didn’t really care. He finally responded, ”Try not to be so clumsy next time.” Not that he had high hopes in that department. At least it seemed Merlin was starting to learn some other things. ”Hunting? What good will I be?” ”None. At all. Which is exactly why I’m bringing you.” Arthur wanted to hunt. As a sport. Which was why bringing skilled knights along was just ridiculous. Aside from that, Merlin would actually treat him like a normal human being instead of a prince and as much as Arthur scolded him for it, if he really minded insolence he would have let Merlin get beheaded a long time ago.
Of course, as insolent as he was to Arthur, he still had to express some hesitance at the idea of keeping something from Uther. Arthur wasn’t a huge fan of disobeying his father’s orders, although he’d been doing it more often as of late. This wasn’t even so much disobeying an order though as it was.. okay he needed to get out and do something enjoyable or he was going to go crazy and Merlin was the only one stupid enough to go along with it. ”He doesn’t need to know… Besides, you’re a servant. It’s not your job to know things. It your job to do as I tell you. And I’m telling you were going hunting.” So, if they got caught, it was his fault.. Until Melrin said something stupid but when that happened it wasn’t Arthur’s problem.
The way things were going now, it didn’t even seem like they’d be getting anywhere any time soon. ”Oh yeah, loads of times.” Arthur watched Merlin attempt to get on the horse and rolled his eyes. ”No. Never.” ”Put your right foot in the stirrup and - Never mind.” Sighing in exasperation (because how to ride a horse was really supposed to be just common knowledge) Arthur jumped down and walked around to the side of Merlin’s horse. ”Cant have you killing yourself before we even get outside.” he explained (because yanno, he couldn’t just help Merlin without insulting him). He lifted the reigns and placed them in Merlin’s right hand, holding his arm tightly to prevent him from falling off (because he didn’t feel like carrying him all the way back to Gauis’s). ”Swing your other leg around.” Once he was on, Arthur got back on his own horse. ”Pull left to go right, right to go left, back to stop, and try not to fall off before we get out the gates.” With those simple instructions given Arthur led them out of the stable.

Try not to be so clumsy next time. Yanno, if Merlin wanted Arthur to be clumsy he could easily make him trip over things so Arthur needed to stop being obnoxious because it was annoying having to say things all the time that just made Merlin look more like a fool. ”Try to knock next time.” None. At all. Which is exactly why I’m bringing you. Okay, that made like zero sense. If they were going to be in some forest and Arthur wanted to hunt he should have been bringing people who knew how to be helpful. ”You’re bringing me so you can laugh at my ignorance at your disposal.” It was a wonder the guy kept trying to sound like a decent person because he was predictable and Merlin could usually see right through him. He doesn’t need to know… Besides, you’re a servant. It’s not your job to know things. It’s your job to do as I tell you. And I’m telling you we’re going hunting. Merlin still believed that his presence on this trip was absolutely stupid and pointless but he wasn’t going to sway Arthur so he just nodded. ”He won’t know by my account.” Merlin wasn’t going to say anything if Arthur didn’t want him to because Merlin didn’t want to either. He was just going to be giving the prince dirty looks if it ended up getting Merlin into trouble later.
Okay the impatient person needed to realize that not everyone had time to prance around on horses all the time looking pretty with their hair blowing in the wind because they were too busy doing ridiculous things like picking up clothes from the floor because certain prance people couldn’t do that themselves. Put your right foot in the stirrup and—Never mind. Good because he was just about to intervene because that explanation wasn’t going to work. Arthur sighed in exasperation but he needed to calm his shit because again, horse riding wasn’t just something that everybody had the opportunity to do all the time. ”Must I remind you whose idea this was?” Can’t have you killing yourself before we even get outside. ”Indeed. Wouldn’t want you to have to find another servant—it might take work.” Swing your other leg around. Now Arthur was actually being helpful and he kept Merlin from plummeting to his death as he tried to get on the horse. Once he did, Arthur gave a set of extremely complicated instructions. Pull left to go right, right to go left, ”Haven’t they got any sense of direction?” That was just going to be confusing because horses needed to know their right from their left. …back to stop, and try not to fall off before we get out the gates. Arthur rode away from the stable and Merlin followed, nearly clinging to the horse in front of him when it began to move forward. They managed to make it out of the castle area place without falling off the horses (okay so that was only an accomplishment for one of them) and by the time they got to the forest, Merlin was slightly more able to direct the horse without nearly falling over.

”Try to knock next time.” ”Why? Your reflexes could certainly use the work.” Really, by this point Merlin should have learned that attempting to get Arthur to do anything would only work against him, but as he’d noted shortly after they met, Merlin was a very audacious idiot and so.. he hardly expected anything would change in the near future. ”You’re bringing me so that you can laugh at my ignorance at your disposal.” ”I’m bringing you because it’s your job to attend to me. And you can’t exactly do that when I’m not here.” He wasn’t just going to give Merlin the weekend off and besides, hunting was rarely a one person task. Not that he expected Merlin to be of any real help. However, when he caught something it was going to take the two of them to get it back. And he enjoyed Merlin’s company but yanno, that obviously can’t be said even in narration without slashes. Grinning, he added, ”The fact you make a fool or yourself so easily is just an added bonus.”
The obnoxious person needed to realize that riding a horse required little more than basic common sense which.. oh right.. Merlin didn’t have. ”Wouldn’t want you to have to find another servant- it might take work.” ”Ah right, work. That’s a concept you don’t know much about.” Hey- he was asking for it. Arthur did about three times more than Merlin on a daily basis, including managing to wake up before noon. With all the obnoxiousness, Arthur nearly did let Merlin fall to his “death”, letting go of him abruptly enough to scare him, before steadying him again, patting him on the shoulder as kind of condolence for the fact that well.. he would never win anything ever. Obviously. ”Haven’t they got any sense of direction?” ”More than you do.. apparently..” he muttered, riding off. He turned back to look at Merlin once they were in the courtyard. ”You look ridiculous.” he informed, pointedly. ”You’re supposed to ride it- not hug it.”
Luckily for Merlin he seemed to grasp the concept slightly better by the time they reached the forests edge, so that he didn’t look absolutely pathetic. ”Ready to actually start moving then?” Not that he was going to wait in the event he wasn’t. He took off at a must faster pace, thoroughly enjoying himself, again with the occasional glance back to make sure Merlin was keeping up. (Or rather, Merlin was still on the horse, because the horse would be running either way.) Though they began on a trail Arthur eventually led them deeper into the woods, and once he’d gotten his thrill out (and made Merlin dodge some number of branches) slowed back to a trot so that they could ride next to each other. ”Well. I’m impressed you’ve made it this far.” he commented. Then again he was also impressed they hadn’t run into sorcerers, bandits, or winged man eating monsters as seemed to happen any time the two of them stepped three feet outside the palace gate.

For the sake of moving the thread without getting five paragraph posts I’m not going to respond to things that happened before they got outside however it can be assumed that Merlin did not appreciate Arthur’s obnoxious comments (even if Merlin really did have awful reflexes). And so Merlin lost the fight and he’d be following Arthur around like a pack mule while he hunted. Sounded like a good time. Ah right, work. That’s a concept you don’t know much about. ”I don’t work? I’m riding a horse for you.” In Merlin’s book that alone was a lot of work considering it required multitasking and energy expending. At about that point Arthur let go of Merlin’s arm long enough for him to lose his balance before Arthur stopped him from falling. The boy glared at him. ”We’re keeping me alive, remember?” Merlin really just couldn’t win. No matter what it said, it was turned back on him. More than you do…apparently.. Merlin opened his mouth to respond though Arthur headed out so he let it go. He was too busy not dying to be obnoxious anyway—feeling like he’d fall to the ground at any moment if he let go of the horse. You look ridiculous. You’re supposed to ride it- not hug it. ”Not all of us are trained from birth to ride,” he called back to Arthur as he began to let up with his grip.
Ready to actually start moving then? ”No, but I don’t have a choice, do I?” Again, Merlin was pretty careful about trying not to fall once they moved again but even at the new speed, after a little while he began to get the hang of it. The sooner Arthur could no longer make fun of the way he rode the better. Arthur seemed to be taking them to the heart of the woods, which personally didn’t sound like a very good idea to Merlin but nobody was asking him so that was cool. As Arthur finally slowed down the horse, Merlin sent him another glare. Well. I’m impressed you’ve made it this far. ”If I didn’t know any better I’d say you were trying to kill me.” The ride had been ridiculously full of obstacles such as branches and trees and such and Merlin was just lucky that Arthur was ahead because while he was looking forward, magic was helpful in moving things out of his path. He’d have otherwise gotten hit multiple times in the face with leaves and twigs. ”Is it time to continue this adventure from the ground?” He really just wanted off the horse (even though he had a feeling that wasn’t going to go any better than getting on the horse had gone).

”I’m riding a horse for you.” ”You are.” Arthur responded. ”Very good Merlin; did you figure that out all by yourself?” Really, he didn’t see what the problem was. ”You know, most people would be quite pleased in your situation. I believe the proper response is ‘thank you Arthur’.” It wasn’t like just anyone got to go riding a horse that belonged to the royal court. It was kind of a big deal. Aside from the fact that just accompanying him would have been an honor to any normal citizen, Arthur had a hard time seeing how anyone could find something that he found enjoyable to be a chore. Riding was exhilarating. Which was why he ignored Merlin for the better part of their trip, until he was bored again. (Because Melrin really had just been brought along for the entertainment value- you caught me.)
”If I didn’t know any better I’d say you were trying to kill me.” ”I didn’t design the forest, Merlin.” Arthur was actually very surprised that Merlin hadn’t fallen off his horse, or at least ended up with twigs and such in his hair. Of course, he wasn’t going to actually acknowledge that he’d done a good job.. for a first timer. Saying that he wasn’t as bad as Arthur had expected had been more than enough of a compliment. ”Is it time to continue this adventure from the ground?” ”That depends, do you want to chase after squirrels or real game?” Obviously that was a rhetorical question because any right minded person would want to go further into the forest where there were more dangerous animals because they provided a more exciting hunting experience. Merlin just wasn’t in the right mind. ”We’ll go another mile on the horses. Then we’ll continue on foot.”

Very good Merlin; did you figure that out all by yourself? Merlin frustratingly dragged his hands down his face as Arthur spoke. You know, most people would be quite pleased in your situation. Most people didn’t know Arthur. He was royal—he couldn’t use that for a defense. Of course people would want to spend the day with him if given the opportunity. I believe the proper response is ‘thank you Arthur’. ”Thank you Arthur,” he said with sarcasm behind it. Arthur was almost sort of a little right though, and Merlin could have been doing worse things with his time so he didn’t have to be completely negative about it. That was true until they started moving quickly and around shit like an obstacle course. Once they’d stopped, Arthur decided to deny he’d made things difficult. I didn’t design the forest, Merlin. ”Only the route,” he retorted. Arthur couldn’t do anything about the forest terrain but he could have gone through it more responsibly and less like an invincible showoff. It’d have been fine if they were done, but apparently they still had a ways to go. Arthur obviously wanted to hunt more exciting creatures but squirrels sounded perfectly exciting to Merlin. We’ll go another mile on the horses Then we’ll continue on foot. ”Because hunting larger game always go well for you.” You know, like killing animals that unleashed curses over the kingdom. Or being attacked by the larger animals—it all sounded so appealing Merlin just couldn’t wait. ”Very well,” he corrected as if he hadn’t made the previous obnoxious comment. He knew that he was beginning to push it with his comments and though he looked at Arthur as a friend sometimes he had to remember where his place was if he didn’t want to end up in the stockades or fired. ”So, who taught you that this is entertainment?” He was still being obnoxious but what he really meant by that was ‘who taught you to hunt?’ It was innocent conversation—he just wasn’t going to make it sound nice.
