Gwaine peeked out the window, smirking at the sight of the knights assembled on the courtyard. Well, he was already late, so there was no point of showing up now. Princess would be upset if he delayed them five minutes or five hours.. Might as well make the most of it. Really, it was a wonder Gwaine was still a knight. Oh, his loyalty to Camelot was great and his ability to fight rivaled Arthur himself, but his sense of time and discipline.. yeah, he didn’t have them. Gwaine never really saw the point of training anyway. Learning to fight from friendly spars and punching bags.. It all seemed utterly ineffective to the guy who’d picked up everything he knew from angry drunks and bandits. Real situations and real people. If you really wanted to learn to fight, get kidnapped by slave traders and thrown into a ring with the orders kill or be killed. Get kidnapped by Morgana and told to kill so your friends can eat. Gwaine may have lacked a certain technical finesse, showmanship with his sword, and common sense around fire and bees… but if you stripped the knights of theirs swords and armor and told them to go at it, Gwaine would have them all on the floor, no question. And he didn’t hesitate to remind anyone when they decided to poke fun. Oh right- modesty. That was a knight trait too. He didn't have that.
Anyway, the facts that training was a monotonous waste of time and Gwaine was overconfident in his abilities were not the only reasons he was currently avoiding his responsibilities. Currently Camelot was full of visitors, which was hardly an unusual occurrence, but being new to the city himself, Gwaine thought the whole thing was positively exciting. So rather than doing the same thing he had to do every day, Gwaine decided to wander around the castle and find something more exciting to occupy himself. He was kind of hoping for a princess, but he made it down the stairs and through one corridor before he found his excitement in the form of Merlin. I know what you’re thinking- Merlin isn’t an exciting person. It was true. However, Merlin was a person who went along with exciting plans. And he was funny. It was pretty shocking to see Merlin by himself. Especially looking so sertious. Where was he going? Letting his curiosity get the better of him Gwaine quietly followed after him, down the hall and into a room which clearly didn’t belong to him or Arthur. Without a second thought he entered the room himself, hiding behind the open door until Merlin’s back was turned, and then sneaking up on him from behind. Gwaine covered Merlin’s mouth with one hand, standing behind him so that he couldn’t see his face, and attempting to disguise his voice said threateningly ”I’ve got half a mind to have you hung for snooping around here” He hardly got through the statement before dissolving into laughter. He released Merlin’s mouth and patted his friend on the shoulder, dropping himself onto the bed of.. whoever’s room they were in (someone importaint if the bed’s softness was any indication). Sorry, the opportunity was too good at pass up.” He grinned. ”Really though, what are you doing?”

Merlin was snooping. You’re probably going through a lot of shock right now so I’m going to give you a moment to process that statement. Okay, I’ll tell you again. Merlin was snooping. But there really wasn’t much else he could do because Arthur had to deal with other shit and after living in Camelot for a few years (well a few hours had been long enough) Merlin had figured out that going and accusing people without being sure and having proof was only going to get him into trouble. So he chose to get himself into more trouble with people who would do worse to him than Arthur by snooping but he was a pretty one-tract-mind person and didn’t think of that part…ever. Well, now that what he’s doing has been justified… Merlin’s life sucked. I mean, people were always coming in and getting into the castle and when they were incredibly conspicuously suspicious nobody else ever seemed to notice except Merlin. That didn’t really do much because no one listened to him. So it really wasn’t his fault he always got himself into these situations because he wouldn’t have to if people would just listen to him but now I’m getting off topic. The part about nobody noticing but Merlin—this time it was an amulet, and it had a subtle glow to it and nobody else seemed to think that wasn’t normal because everyone in Camelot was evidently blind. Normal things didn’t just go around glowing so Merlin figured that was snoop-worthy. He wanted to get it to Gaius, so he had waited outside the guest’s room for a while before he finally left, giving Merlin the chance to run into the room and look around. He made sure he saw the person leave before running back up to Arthur’s chambers, making sure he wasn’t around (because if he was pretty soon Merlin was going to be in deep shit for going to the tavern which was ridiculous because Merlin had yet to see the tavern without being with Arthur). From there he (thought he had) snuck back down to the room and began to look. He had been just about to use magic to move shit around when he was pretty sure he was in a lot of trouble. For a few seconds there, he was pretty surprised and coming up with a story to ramble about why he’d been in there. I’ve got half a mind to have you hung for snooping around here. Obviously that guy hadn’t read the justification above for Merlin’s snooping. But anyway he sort of froze unsure of what to do but then the guy started laughing which either meant he was insane or it wasn’t who he thought it was. He should’ve known it was Gwaine. Merlin quickly and spastically turned around and looked at Gwaine on the bed, unable to hide his grin though he tried. ”Yes, thank you for nearly giving me a heart attack.” He took a few steps closer to the bed before continuing. Really though, what are you doing? He shrugged. ”Something’s not right about him. I’ve got…a bad feeling.” Yanno sometimes hiding the fact that he knew about and recognized magic-related things when he saw them really made Merlin look like more of an idiot than he actually was. ”I s’pose I could ask you the same question. Aren’t the knights in training at this hour?” He could say he was surprised to see Gwaine running around alone where he wasn’t supposed to be but that would be a pathetic lie. Okay, so Merlin and Gwaine were both snooping around someplace they weren’t supposed to be. It’s very shocking, as had been established by a certain obnoxious narrator whose name starts with a T. For the record, it was not that Merlin was more observant than Arthur or any of the others- it was that some people had better things to do with their lives than stare at other men’s necklaces. Okay, now that that justification was over... ”Yes, thank you for nearly giving me a heart attack.” Gwaine laughed. ”Just keeping you on your toes.” He nodded, listening to Merlin’s explanation for what he was doing in the room. Gwaine actually believed him wholeheartedly. I mean, he was no stranger to acting on a hunch. (Yanno, guy who went after a blue light through a cave that had been taking over by a creepy sadistic sorcerer unarmed.) Merlin hardly seemed daring or unbelievable in comparison. ”The one with the strange glowing necklace, right?” Yeah, back when I said that most of the knights had better things to do than stare at other men’s necklaces… I wasn’t talking about Gwaine there. ”Saw him heading out of the castle late last night..” He explained. ”Ran into him, actually.” he ammended with a smirk. Gwaine had been on his way back from the tavern (I know, you’re shocked) and bumped into the guy. ”Ive never seen a man so quick to attack- and I’ve annoyed some very impatient men.” As far as Gwaine was considered, anyone who threatened him before he opened his mouth was shady. ”I s’pose I could ask you the same question. Aren’t the knights in training at this hour?” Gwaine grinned before making a skeptical face (as if Merlin had asked why he wasn’t jumping into a pile of garbage or something equally as unpleasant sounding) ”I wasn’t feeling it this morning.”He hadn’t been feeling it this morning… or the morning before.. and he probably wasn’t going to be feeling it tomorrow either. He got up from the bed and turned his attention to the area Merlin had been searching. ”So what exactly are we looking for?” Oh yeah, now that he was involved Merlin wasn’t getting rid of him. Which Merlin shouldn’t have had a complaint about because he was always complaining about how he had to do everything himself anyway. They didn’t get to search very long though. Hearing footsteps approaching Gwaine put his hand on Merlin’s shoulder and shoved him under the bed, following quickly behind. Laying there, he watched footsteps enter the room and go to the closet. He took something which Gwaine only got a very quick look at before leaving the room and slamming the door behind him.

Just keeping you on your toes. Honestly, Merlin was snooping in someone else’s room and had left the door open. He really should have at least considered the possibility that someone could come in behind him. Maybe keeping on his toes was a pretty good idea. Then again, the obnoxiousness in Gwaine’s method wasn’t necessary. There were other ways he could have done that. He grinned at Gwaine nonetheless. ”A simple ‘Merlin, you should be more careful’ would have sufficed.” Then again he’d never known Gwaine to take the fun out of anything. He nodded in confirmation when Gwaine identified who they were trying to mess with. Ran into him, actually. Merlin raised an eyebrow as the guy seemed amused. I’ve never seen a man so quick to attack- and I’ve annoyed some very impatient men. ”I’m sure you have.” Of course he seemed pretty proud of that accomplishment. ”Well that was easier than I thought.” It seemed like every time this happened (so about an average of four times a day) Merlin had to go through so much shit just to get someone to take his suspicion seriously. I wasn’t feeling it this morning. ”I didn’t know Arthur excused knights from training when they weren’t ‘feeling it’.” He smirked slightly. It didn’t surprise him at all that Gwaine wasn’t all into that. From what he knew about the guy he’d had more excitement hands on before he became a knight than he did at training. So what exactly are we looking for? ”We?” Again, not very surprised here. He actually was pretty content with having Gwaine around. He’d be helpful…as long as he didn’t get all curious and off track. Not that Merlin knew much about that but we all know he’s a very curious person. ”The ‘strange glowing necklace’. It’s got to be important.” He barely had time to look around a little more before he heard the footsteps, and Gwaine was shoving him under a bed. He got as far from the door as he could while staying under, quietly watching the guy as he came in, grabbed something and left. After he shut the door, Merlin waited a few seconds before moving back out from under the bed. ”He probably took it with him…” He quickly moved toward the door, not finding it too difficult to make the decision. ”We need to follow him.” If they didn’t, they weren’t going to figure out what he was doing which obviously was a big deal because they never minded their own business. Gwaine only grinned wider while Merlin explained that there were other ways he could have gotten his attention. ”A simple ‘Merlin, you should be more careful’ would have sufficed.” ”Yeah but there’s no fun in that.” he remarked, shaking his head. Obviously, Gwaine had his priorities set. If such wasn’t clear from his story telling. ”Well that was easier than I thought.” ”Did you want me to make it harder for you?” he raised an eyebrow. ”I can pretend I think you’re crazy like everyone else and tell you to get out of the good nobleman’s bedroom.” Obviously there was loads of sarcasm in that statement. Gwaine wouldn’t do either of those things if the angry man and Arthur and half of Camelot was standing at the door. Of course that should hardly have been shocking. He did love a good underdog fight. ”I didn’t know Arthur excused knights from training when they weren’t ‘feeling it’” Gwaine laughed. ”Well, he should. It would make for a much more efficient session.” Okay, so it would probably result in no one showing up which would thus get training canceled which would, in Gwaine’s opinion, give everyone a much better use of their time. ”What Arthur doesn’t know won’t hurt him.” he continued. ”Besides, I told you when we first met- people get tired of me.” It didn’t upset him, he was just stating a fact. (Arthur would get as annoyed at him for messing around during training as he would for not showing up at all.) In fact, Gwaine was often amused by how quickly his out-of-place ways became too much for the other knights. ”We?” ”Well I can’t just leave you here. What are you going to do if someone else walks in and threatens to have you hung?” Clearly Merlin had proven earlier that he wasn’t prepared and so Gwaine needed to stick around if only for his friend’s safety. (Though he was obviously very interested in this search and the potential excitement that was going to come to Camelot from it.) When the man came back he stayed as close to the edge of the bed as he could to get the best view, and got up quickly, following Merlin and looking outside to figure out which way the man headed. ”We need to follow him.” Gwaine nodded. Obviously they needed to follow him. The man had a strange necklace and a bad attitude. It was an overwhelming amount of evidence. He’d practically confessed to murder. (There two really just couldn’t mind their own business.) ”I think I know where he’s going.” Gwaine walked out the door and waited until he could no longer heard the footsteps down the hall. ”Take the shortcut out the armory to the tunnels. That’s where I saw him going last night. I’ll follow him and catch up with you.”

So skipping a little bit of the obnoxiousness ready go. I can pretend I think you’re crazy like everyone else and tell you to get our of the good nobleman’s bedroom. ”Please don’t do that—I’m starting to think everyone else is the exact same person and it’s already confusing enough as it is without not being able to tell you apart from the others.” If everyone else was going to be brainwashed Merlin expected Gwaine to remain a nonconformist. He heard it from everyone else. You’re a servant and you need to mind your own business and you’re overreacting. He was starting to involuntarily go deaf every time he realized the rant was about to begin. Despite Merlin’s joking around he did know that Gwaine wouldn’t act like that, and he’d do it badly if Merlin had asked him to. Then Gwaine went on about how he wasn’t at training and Merlin couldn’t blame him (he’d helped Arthur train before. It wasn’t fun) though he couldn’t help but grin. ”Can’t be that bad.” This time he laughed. ”I’m sure they’ll miss you.” There was no way they weren’t going to notice that Gwaine wasn’t there. In fact Gwaine was probably the least likely—no, he was the least likely to be able to get by with skipping without someone noticing. Then again, he was right. What Arthur didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him and for all he knew Gwaine was missing training for a very important reason. Merlin didn’t believe it for a second, but the possibility was there. What are you going to do if someone else walks in and threatens to have you hung? ”I’ll figure it out, as I always do.” He did hesitate before he responded. He really didn’t know how he always did…but he did. He hadn’t really been considering that as an option so it hadn’t gotten much thought. His plans rarely did. Contrary to the belief of the obnoxious narration above me, it was very clear that they did need to follow the man out because he was clearly a threat to Camelot in some way if he was being all sketchy. I think I know where he’s going. Well, Gwaine’s snooping had paid off. Someone needed to tell Arthur about this. Gwaine told Merlin where to go and he nodded, running exactly where he was told, careful to stay hidden. Once he got to the tunnels, knowing Gwaine would keep following the man as far as he could, Merlin continued down the tunnels until he reached the end—a carriage in sight right outside. He began to move toward it, stopping and crouching behind the wall of the tunnel’s exit as he waited for Gwaine to show up. Deciding he didn’t want to wait after about a minute (he’s very patient), he made his way to the back and pulled himself in, beginning to search through the belongings in the back and being very fortunate that no one had been in the back (it would have been a nice thing to think about before he ran in). “I’m starting to think everyone else is the exact same person and it’s already confusing enough as it is without not being able to tell you apart from the others.” Gwaine smirked at his exasperation. ”You’ll never have that problem.” he assured. As has been established by the other narrator, Gwaine couldn’t be like everyone else if he tried. ”I’d have to take lessons from Leon or Elyan and they’d never let me live it down.” Asking for help? Pshaw. Gwaine didn’t do that. Gwaine liked to pretend he thought he was the most amazing thing on the planet. He wasn’t actually that conceded.. but that was a secret he didn’t plan on letting anyone in on any time soon. He scoffed when Merlin implied that going to training wouldn’t have been that bad though it turned into a grin at his next remark. ”I’m sure they’ll miss you.” Ha. Yeah. That wasn’t very likely. Notice Gwaine was gone? Definitely. But sadness was likely the not the emotion which would follow the realization. Other than maybe by Percival because he actually had a sense of humor and it was rather cruel to make him put up with all the ridiculous people alone. ”I’ll figure it out, as I always do.” Okay, so that was basically the worst answer in the history of answers which should have told Gwaine Merlin had absolutely no idea what he was doing however the guy simply laughed. ”Can’t argue that logic, can I?” Planning? Nah. Gwaine would be a hypocrite to say anything else. Anyway it’s time to stop being obnoxious and progress the thread. Merlin went off towards the armory and Gwaine turned the other way, taking the stairs down two at the time until he could again see the sketchy person. He continued tailing the guy, trying to remain inconspicuously out of sight which.. admittedly.. not exactly his strong point, but he managed to do it until they got out of the castle and he confirmed that the guy was going where he thought. They approached the carriage and Gwaine looked around for Merlin, catching the shadow in the back just as the guy was getting in the front to drive off. Gwaine did the obvious thing in this situation and jumped on the back himself, grinning when he saw Merlin going through boxes. Hardly a few seconds later the carriage started moving, shoving them back against the edge. ”Well I guess we’re going for a ride.” he said, clearly amused with the situation. ”Did you find anything?”

Merlin laughed when Gwaine mentioned what he’d have to go through to be a normal person however for the sake of keeping the posts in this thread under five paragraphs we’re going to move on. Can’t argue that logic, can I? Well finally someone thought Merlin knew what he was talking about. He needed to hang out with Gwaine more often. Apparently he spent all his time with too many stiff people. ”No, you can’t. Again, will you tell Arthur about that?” Arthur needed to be more like Gwaine. Just sayin’. It’d avoid many problems (and by avoid many problems I mean avoid Merlin’s problem about not being trusted until the fact that Arthur was more like Gwaine got them into another problem that was potentially more dangerous). Speaking of dangerous situations…Merlin couldn’t resist the urge to snoop and so he ended up right in the back of the carriage. He didn’t really plan it out—he’d expected that if someone came back he could just sort of…leave. He was sort of a magic person so it wasn’t going to be that difficult… but then there was Gwaine who appeared in the back with him (which he really should have expected I mean this is Gwaine of course he was going to follow the guy all the way back and he wasn’t just going to be all ‘oh cool I was right I can turn around and walk back now’). Well I guess we’re going for a ride. Merlin stopped rummaging long enough to turn around and see Gwaine there, right after realizing that they were moving. It was hard to miss…seeing as they were shoved over. ”Can’t say I had a more exciting afternoon planned,” he muttered, not completely happy with the situation though there was kind of no turning back now. Did you find anything? ”I guess he’s got the biggest clue on him.” Merlin hadn’t found anything else, though he’d only gotten to go through a little space (he was a very thorough searcher he’d done this many times before). Now, I mean, Arthur probably should have listened to Gwaine, because Gwaine had some great ideas.. You know, I keep coming up with things to say about this but it's very hard to do so with amusing bias because I play both of them and I'd love to talk about Gwaine ruling Camelot and the lack of daily training and frequent parties and removal of the magic ban and how outright awesome everything would be.. but I can't do any of this with bias (because yes, bias is good) so we're just going to move on and you can deal with that. Of course, one of the many things Gwaine and Arthur had in common (lets face it their pretty similar Phips can play them both) was the fact that if they were going to do something, they were going to go all the way with it despite how stupid they knew it was or how likely they were to get killed in the process. Arthur tended to do it for ore noble reasons.. Gwaine did it because it sounded amusing.. but either way, both of them would have followed the guy all the way to his carrage and (assuming one of them didn't have the authority to arrest on sight) they'd both be going inside. "Can't say I have a more exciting afternoon planed," "Weren't looking forward to mucking out the stables?" He smirked. Yeah, so Merlin wasn't all that pleased but Gwaine was obnoxiously optimistic so he really didn't think it was that bad. "Hey, the way I look at it we've both just got ourselves an excuse which has nothing to do with the taverns." That had to have been a first. Granted, Gwaine tavern excuses were generally pretty legit. I mean… okay not story time writing a post okay. Merlin explained that they basically had nothing to prove this guy's creepiness other than yanno, the thing around his neck which looked sort of kind of magical in certain lightings. That probably would have been a bummer but, yeah, it was Gwaine. And as always he had a really good totally practical idea that was obviously going to go off flawlessly and save the day. Ready? Okay. Drumroll. "I guess we're going to have to get that off of him then." Because they could totally do that. No problem. He wouldn't miss it. He only like guarded it like Gollum with the ring.. Alright we're making cross fandom references time to end this post.

Well, they’d managed to get themselves into quite the adventure, but Merlin wasn’t all that thrilled with it. He just wanted to find something…important…and leave unseen. The chances of that happening seemed to be dwindling with every second they wasted behind the carriage. At least Gwaine was enjoying himself. Weren’t looking forward to mucking out the stables? He smirked slightly, shaking his head. ”Not exactly—not that it matters much. If Arthur is finished before we get back I’ll have plenty of mucking time.” He was used to it. He’d stopped trying to avoid that a long time ago because his nosey curiosity had gotten him to stray from his duties as Arthur’s servant more times than he could count. It was a wonder he hadn’t been fired—oh wait, he had been. Hey, the way I look at it we’ve both just got ourselves an excuse which has nothing to do with the taverns. Merlin scoffed. He wasn’t sure how he felt about that. ”Not quite sure which is worse at this point.” Gwaine actually went to the tavern so yanno what that wasn’t even comparable. It wouldn’t have been so bad if they could get what they wanted and leave. Then they’d have proof and a pretty damn good excuse. I guess we’re going to have to get that off of him then. Merlin looked at Gwaine like he was deranged. ”When you speak, do you actually hear yourself?” It was on the guy. Getting off of him wouldn’t be very inconspicuous. Considering they didn’t know much about the guy other than his track record for being sketchy…. Inconspicuousness was the goal. ”Alright… you go ask him to take it off then. I’ll be back here.” [/style][/style]
