Fire, eh? Again? I’m starting to see a pattern with you. ”You as well, maybe your snooping should be more thought out from now on,” he retaliated quietly though with a grin on his face. He was shaken, but Gwaine would start being obnoxious just to try to fix it. The grin didn’t last very long however so apparently the comment wasn’t obnoxious enough. Gwaine was in horrible shape. So was Arthur. Merlin didn’t know shit—he couldn’t do this. Gwaine openly lied to Merlin about how he was (dude you just coughed up more blood don’t even try) but Merlin nodded, seeing him put his head against the tree. At least he was cooperating as far as the not moving was concerned. It was important that he didn’t… because at the moment it was the best thing he could do. As Gwaine talked to Arthur, Merlin went to get the two of them water, a task that didn’t take very long now that he didn’t have to hide the use of his magic. He got back as quickly as he could, first giving some to Gwaine and then moving back to Arthur… who’d concerningly been very quiet for a while. ”I’m sorry—“ he muttered, giving Arthur some water. ”Are you alright—even in the slightest?” Because like obviously he wasn’t but if he was getting there it’d make things pretty awesome for Merlin. He looked back over at Gwaine, wanting to do more to help him as well. ”What’d she use?” He knew Gwaine wasn’t thrilled with the fact that he’d told Morgana where they were going. He didn’t need to hear anything other than what she’d done to torture him. Knowing that could lead him to being able to help him a little bit more than he had. "You as well, maybe your snooping should be more thought out from now on." "Percival agreed with this one so all thinking responsibilities automatically fell on his shoulders." It was like with Fred and George. If there was a flaw in the plan it should have been foreseen by the smarter of the two of them and that was most certainly not Gwaine. "Also I'm calling you out on cheating because when we stabbed her nothing happened… Then again the real cheater here is definitely the person who made herself impervious to death." Seriuosly that was like.. beyond not allowed. As much as Gwaine could joke about it (and oh he had more) he really did take full responsibility for what had happened and it was driving him crazy. It was his stupid idea. He was the one who told Morgana where they were. He did fail. "I'm sorry. I really.. truly am. And I know that doesn't make up for much." He glanced between the two of them, before looking back at the floor. He had to say it. Merlin left him and Arthur alone and well we all know Gwaine can't shut up to save all of their lives so after like two seconds of looking around at all the trees and getting bored he turned to Arthur. "You really look rough." "You don't look much better." "Right but slightly better is all I need to be the most attractive man in the kingdom." "Merlin looks better than you do right now." Gwaine glanced through the trees as he heard footsteps, grinning at Merlin when he returned with water. "Merlin— I think you need to check him for head injury. He just said something nice about you." It got a slight smirk out of Arthur who threw in "He left out the part that I was insulting him." so Gwaine felt pretty good about himself. Trying to entertain the two of them was exhausting though. Enough that he remained legitimately quiet while the two of them had their moment. "I'm sorry—" "You have nothing to apologize for." Arthur said quietly, though assertively. He'd heard that too many times— there was no one at fault here, and if there was, it certainly wasn't Merlin. "Are you alright— even in the slightest?" "I'm okay." Yup now they were both lying (well, both people I'm writing anyway). You know they were trying to make Merlin feel better about life so he should just appreciate the effort for what it was worth. And then we kind of obnoxiously switch back again Phips doesn’t feel like writing transitions so yeah Merlin was talking to Gwaine again. "What'd she use?" "It was a.. uh, snake. About this big, this long, definitely magic and not the nice kind." Because that didn't go without saying. He made the gestures with his hands shakily.. It was like being drunk minus all the fun. He didn't actually know much about what it was, other than well, what Morgana and a handful of previous dead people had made quite evident. Yup, it was a pleasant afternoon.

Percival agreed with this one so all thinking responsibilities automatically fell on his shoulders. The Fred/George comparison was unfair and highly uncalled for because that was mine and you can’t use it against me when my characters don’t agree with it. Merlin would blame both of them and they’d have to deal with it. Merlin did grin slightly though it was still a horrible defense. ”My apologies—I hadn’t realized you’d have forgotten about that plan had Percy told you not to go.” Gwaine wouldn’t have stopped for anyone… so by default it was his fault no matter what. He scoffed when Gwaine brought up the cheating, nodding in agreement at the last comment. ”I’m not the cheater here.” But Merlin was smart and amazing so he knew how to take care of that shit. He could still win against a cheater. I’m sorry. I really.. truly am. Merlin had seen it coming. Not that he’d expected Gwaine to say it out loud, but it had been pretty obvious what had been bothering him. He wasn’t going to go easy on himself for that. Geez—him and Arthur needed to give themselves a break every once in a while. The two of them just took full on blame for everything they did. Merlin shook his head. ”I know what she can do—you’re not to blame.” He hadn’t for a second blamed Gwaine for that. Morgana was a psychopathic bitch who really knew how to torture people. She was the one responsible. ”Really,” he reinforced as Gwaine looked back down at the ground. Merlin had had his share dealing with Morgana. He understood.
He left them alone and surprisingly (not really) they were already being obnoxious with each other by the time he got back. Merlin—I think you need to check him for head injury. He just said something nice about you. Then Arthur responded which I would quote as well but too many italics. Merlin smirked and turned to Arthur. ”Really? The one time you say something nice about me and I’m not there to hear it.” He gave Gwaine the water as he scoffed out another remark. ”The insulting Gwaine part I’m not so upset about—I’m fairly sure I’ll have other opportunities to hear it again.” Because that one happened a lot more often. He wasn’t worried about that. You have nothing to apologize for. Well he’d sort of just killed Arthur’s sister so he sort of felt like he did. Not that she didn’t deserve to die (he fully believed that she did) but the general fact that she’d once been someone that Arthur got along fairly well with was giving Merlin a little bit of guilt. He fiddled with his fingers, glancing at them as Arthur … completely lied. I’m okay. Well to be fair he hadn’t expected a different response. ”Your two favorite people are here so I wouldn’t expect much else.” It could have been worse. Maybe. If they all imagined really really hard. It was a.. uh, snake. As soon as Gwaine described it, he knew what it was. It helped living with Google. Gaius would have recognized it sooner, but Merlin was pretty sure. ”A nathair.” He didn’t have enough power to reverse it, but he could ease the pain a bit. ”I can make you feel better, but it won’t be pleasant.” Upon getting the confirmation, Merlin used magic, getting Gwaine to cough up the venom. ”My apologies—I hadn’t realized you’d have forgotten about that plan had Percy told you not to go.” Gwaine smirked a little. "Of course not. But since he did agree and it was my idea I thought he should do a little bit of the work." Percy would never have let him go alone anyway. Gwaine knew that. Which was why it was his bad idea and he had to own up to it. "I know what she can do— you're not to blame." The look. That.. yeah.. you know what I'm talking about. It was never that simple. Though Morgana certainly had fault in this, she hadn't sought him out. Gwaine had hunted her down. And then he'd told her.. Though Gwaine would have shrugged it off had anyone else done it, he was going to be insanely hard on himself. He and Arthur were more alike than they d admit in that sense. ”Really? The one time you say something nice about me and I’m not there to hear it.”" "If you were here I wouldn't have said it." Arthur informed, and Gwaine laughed, though Merlin's next statement had him faking irritation. "The insulting Gwaine part I’m not so upset about—I’m fairly sure I’ll have other opportunities to hear it again.” "I have no idea why. Gwaine's amazing." Clearly Arthur just needed someone to pick on. Or like multiple people. He should hire someone for that because he and Merlin already had other jobs. Or maybe they should stop doing those and just do this one. They were a lot better at this one. (And getting into trouble but no one was gonna pay them for that)
Seeing Merlin still look uncomfortable after Arthur told him not to apologize he added "It was how it had to be. There was nothing else any of us could have done." He knew, and had known for some time, that that was what it was going to have to come to. He was upset that it had been necessary, upset at what she had become, but he had stopped feeling sorry for her once she had started killing innocent men. He still wondered if things could have been different, if he could have done something when they were still close, but after everything that happened, Arthur would have killed her himself. "Your two favorite people are here so I wouldn't expect much else." He rolled his eyes though didn't comment. It was obvious he wouldn't trade Merlin being there for anyone else. And while he normally didn't have anything nice to say about Gwaine after spending time with him, he couldn't quite bring himself to insult him again. The situation was too serious. "A nathair." "That's it." As soon as he heard it Gwaine recognized the name Gauis had used to describe the snake the last time they had to deal with it. "I can make you feel better, but it won't be pleasant." He chuckled slightly."These things never are." The amount of fixes Gwaine had been in.. he'd known where this one was going long before Merlin had said anything. He'd have taken care of it himself had he not been trying to assure the other two he was perfectly fine. "Go ahead." Merlin started chanting again and Gwaine could practically feel the venom rushing through his veins, burning like hell. He almost instantly started choking, coughing and throwing up shit.. which was, by the way, he would normally consider undignifyingly girly, though at the moment he could not be arsed to care in the slightest. He seriously didn't think it was ever going to end (this probably would have gone a lot more simply had the thing bit him once instead of like a billion times) When it finally did he laid down haphazardly, speaking as soon as he'd slightly caught his breath. "You were right— not that pleasant." He smirked at Merlin, pushing his hair off of his face. "Thanks."

So Gwaine was delusional—glad we came to that conclusion. But when more serious things started happening he was being perfectly rational. Merlin would have felt the same way. Though he truly didn’t blame Gwaine, it’d take a lot to get Gwaine to believe that what he’d done was forgivable. They’d work on it later. They didn’t have the time to make Gwaine less stubborn because they had other shit to do and Merlin wanted them all to be safe and in one piece before he turned eighty. Not that he hadn’t done that a few times already but like the real turning eighty. Even with the amount of time it was going to take to get the two in better condition, it was relieving to hear them still being… themselves. If you were here I wouldn’t have said it. ”Ah, right, of course not. Why compliment your favorite servant for the purpose of raising his self-esteem? Silly me.” He grinned though highly disagreeing with Gwaine’s comment. Gwaine’s amazing. ”Yup, all the time.” His sarcasm was pretty clear. ”Even that time you thought it’d be a good idea to punch a sorcerer.” Yup, we’re going there. It was time. He was just full of amazing ideas.
And we’re getting serious again. There was nothing else any of us could have done. Merlin nodded, understanding though it was going to take some time to get over it. ”I suppose so.” He wished it had gone differently. ”I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier.” He could have known earlier and maybe things would have been different. He’d wanted to say something but it wasn’t like he’d had much of a choice in the matter contrary to popular Phips’s belief. ”She’d have hurt Gaius, or you, she’d have hurt someone.” He couldn’t have that be done under his fault. In the beginning, he hadn’t even known how psychopathic she was going to become. Flipping the switch. Gwaine. Merlin turned his attention toward him, giving him a small ‘sorry’ sort of expression before going on with it. Once it was finished, Gwaine was still his obnoxious self. You were right—not that pleasant. Merlin scoffed. ”It looked like you were enjoying yourself to me.” Thanks. He nodded. ”You’ll only get better from here but it’ll take time.” That was Merlin speak for “You’re not well yet so don’t be a stupid ass yet.”

”Ah, right, of course not. Why compliment your favorite servant for the purpose of raising his self-esteem? Silly me.” "Glad you understand." Arthur managed a smirk, slightly enjoying the obnoxious people he was surrounded by. He was also glad that Merlin would have someone else in case anything happened .. not that Merlin was incapable of taking care of himself (as he now knew) or Gwaine was capable of doing anything but getting them into more trouble. "Even that time you thought it'd be a good idea to punch a sorcerer." "You did what?" Arthur questioned. He shouldn't have been surprised. Well, surprised at anything other than the fact Gwaine had somehow managed to survive on his own as long as he had. "It was a fantastic idea." Gwaine protested, pointing at Arthur. "You didn't know about it— clearly it worked out well enough." Because the index of success was Arthur's lack of knowledge. Given recent events, it seemed likely enough. "She's have hurt Gaius, or you, she'd have hurt someone." Arthur nodded, understanding.. Gwaine on the other hand, had his own point to but in with. "I kind of assumed that was her plan anyway." He could have been wrong. I mean Gwaine was no deductive genius. Then again you didn't exactly need to be to piece together all the 'death to Arthur', 'death to Merlin', 'oh hey let me just send you empty handed into an arena full of giant ax wielding men who want to kill you', or 'do as I say or i'm just gonna let the crazy magic demon snake play chew toy on you' speeches.. Yeeeah, Gwaine really didn't like Morgana. "No offence." he added offhandedly, not sounding particularly sorry. He was glad she was dead. (And would remain so until people stopped attacking Camelot and he got bored.) Having a hard time taking the whole death conversation seriously, it shouldn't have been that surprising Gwaine went right back to being obnoxious after Merlin's spell had finished working. "It looked like you were enjoying yourself to me." "Time of my life." Merlin went all 'Gwaine don't do anything stupid' in Merlin speak and he grinned, clearly not planning on listening to him (none of them listened to each other— I don’t' even understand why they still bothered trying) "You'll only get better from here but it'll take time." "Well then, what's our next plan of action on this little adventure?"
