Things couldn’t get much worse. In fact, Merlin was pretty sure that only a rainstorm could possibly worsen the current situation so if it started to rain within the near future he was literally going to throw a hissy fit. Arthur could not die. Merlin had worked too goddamn hard over the last few years keeping him alive to let that happen. That... and Merlin sort of cared about him a little bit… don’t tell Arthur. Anyway, Arthur had needed rest and Merlin was sitting up keeping watch. He knew that Arthur needed the rest but it was a shitty situation because stopping was slowing them down… and not stopping was slowing Arthur down and in turn slowing them down. Slowing down was a bad thing. It left Merlin on edge and he was pretty sure Arthur wasn’t too happy about it either so everyone was just in a really good mood but anyway you already know this shit. After he really couldn’t take it anymore Merlin stood up and walked over to Arthur, lightly shoving his shoulder and pulling him up. ”’Got to keep moving.” Arthur was lucky Merlin wasn’t like some twelve year old boy who had never done physical work in his life because if he was he wouldn’t have been able to drag him around and they’d both be collapsed on the ground somewhere miles away like Merlin was surprised hadn’t already happened with the little sleep they were getting. ”The stopping—did it do any good?” So he was kind of obviously flipping. It was ridiculous—he was the most powerful sorcerer in the world and he was flipping because he couldn’t fix a stupid sword problem. And I’m not saying Merlin would be an apparation addict but it would have been helpful in the current situation if he could just apparate and then he wouldn’t need to worry about how much Arthur wanted to walk. Nor would he have to worry about anyone crossing their path… though he’d sort of had that covered. It happened every once in a while—there’d be voices close by. Merlin was becoming put off with it (as he was with everything else in case you didn’t get that) because the last thing he wanted to do was use magic every thirty seconds (okay he was like thrilled he could do it without hiding it but still he would have preferred to do it out of Arthur’s sight). Every few minutes, he’d make a really stupid attempt at conversation… like how there was so much green around them or how his shoes were making an annoying noise in the dirt as they moved. ”How’re you holding out? Could be worse,” he muttered, ”Could be raining. As the king death by lightning strike would be a bit anticlimactic.” [/style][/style]

Okay, so as the last post pretty much covered.. things couldn't get a lot worse. They'd won the battle, but the war wasn't over. Morgana was still alive.. and Arthur was dying. The first part was obviously what concerned Arthur the most. Death didn't scare him. After what like forty near misses he knew it would happen eventually. He'd accepted that. But Camelot would be vulnerable so long as his sister was still alive and she certainly wouldn't hesitate to strike while they were down. And then of course on top of all this was the fact that Merlin, Merlin, was a sorcerer. Of all the things that he should have been worrying about right now that was the one that nagged him the most. Every weird thing he could now explain, the things Merlin had said.. and of course the fact that finding out his best friend manservant had magic pretty much turned the world upside down. They'd been stopped… again.. they'd been stopping much more frequently, much to both their irritations. Arthur had dozed off at some point though he woke quickly when Merlin touched his shoulder and looked up, confused. "Got to keep moving." He nodded his head and let the guy help him up, having been extremely compliant thus far. He looked at Merlin for a moment before speaking. "Before the battle I had a… vision, of sorts. You told me Morgana would send her armies through a hidden trail.. That was actually you, wasn't it?" Okay, so you're shocked. Most of the things Arthur had said since they set off had been in regards to Merlin's magic but you could hardly blame him. All of a sudden every action was in question. Thinking back on it he didn't know how he could have been so stupid.. or in denial (because Merlin was the worse secret keeper in history Arthur being in denial made like a hundred times more sense) "The stopping— did it do any good?" "Some." Yeah, per usual, it was the Phips character trying to calm the Tilly character down in a time of crisis. It was clear Merlin was flipping do it his incessant rambling. He only did it when he was scared.. nervous…angry… excited.. alright Arthur could remember maybe two instances when Merlin was't babbling pointless. Arthur was usually glad for the attempts at conversation but this whole getting somewhere thing was hard enough without trying to keep up a conversation about grass so by the third statement he made he got a "Merlin, please shut up" Yeah.. wanna guess how long that lasted? Three.. two.. "Could be worse. Could be raining. As the king death by lightning strike would be very anticlimactic." Yup there it was. Indication they were extremely mature people. Yup. "I suppose we should be thankful for good weather."

It was expected that magic was incorporated into almost all of their conversations… but having those conversations with Arthur were going to feel strange for a while. Hiding and denying it was as automatic as breathing for Merlin. Yea, yea, even if the job he had done at hiding it was horrible, he’d managed to do it for so long and so yes, it was automatic. That was actually you, wasn’t it? As uncomfortable as the whole situation was, Merlin had to admit to himself, at least, that it wasn’t all bad. At least now Arthur could see how ridiculous it was to believe Merlin would skip a battle to run an errand. He nodded in confirmation. ”It was the least I could do not being there.” He smirked after a moment, giving it some thought. ”Which, by the way, was because I had absolutely no other choice.” Things would have gone much better if Merlin had been there the whole time…which magic… and it was no secret that he’d have preferred to be there as much as Arthur. Some. ”You sound awful.” He didn’t know how much he believed that but for the sake of his sanity he tried not to question it in his mind. Either way, the rambling was happening because as previously stated they were in one of the many circumstances that called for rambling. Merlin, please shut up. ”Honestly, I don’t know what gives you the idea that of all times I’ll do as you say now.” Merlin rarely listened to Arthur. Maybe he had for a bit in the very beginning, when he’d first gotten to Camelot, but the intimidation factor quickly wore off. Besides, he had a good reason not to listen. Optimism was the only thing keeping him from flipping out to the extent of being completely useless. I suppose we should be thankful for good weather. ”For that…among other things. I’m also pretty thankful you’re not fat.” Merlin had an opportunity to be obnoxious while Arthur was in this condition and he wasn’t passing it up. "It was the least I could do not being there." So it was him. It was.. a difficult idea to digest. None the less Arthur would have asked it if he hadn't been extremely sure. "Many men owe you their lives." he responded seriously. Had it not been for Merlin's warning they all probably would have perished. He knew that Merlin wouldn't have gone had there not been a good reason for it, however hearing it did reassure him. "I don't suppose you could tell me, now, what you were doing?" A bit of Arthur's usual mocking tone slipped into that one. Though he did have a slightly new respect for Merlin the guy owed him at least that explanation. I mean after the last awful excuse he'd given. "It wasn't the first time you've done that though.. spoken to me without being there. After you'd drank the poison, in the cave…" Yes, piece by piece Arthur was realizing everything. And again, he really did have a slightly newfound respect for Merlin.. despite the fact that he was slightly irritated about having been kept in the dark so long. "You sound awful." "You never did learn how to speak to your lord. Worst servant I've ever had.." he muttered, smiling slightly. Merlin had been right of course. Forty near death experiences and Arthur couldn't think of a time when he'd felt so awful. Arthur had not been as un-alert and Gaius and Merlin assumed.. He knew very well what was wrong with him. But he and Merlin had no reason to discuss such things. (Whoa.. I started getting all formal. Arthur's being serious. I'd be worried about him too.) "Honestly, I don't know what gives you the idea that of all times I'd do as you say now." "Wishful thinking." He was entitled to hope, wasn't he? But yeah yeah Merlin was too because we really don't need him to go flipping on anyone. Thus the ridiculous conversation. "I'm also pretty thankful you're not fat." He scoffed in response. "At least you finally admitted it... I'm suppose I'm thankful you're not actually mentally afflicted."

In case it wasn’t obvious Merlin was enjoying the current conversation though it was sort of a serious one so he wasn’t being too obnoxious about all of it. Later though, when Arthur was in good condition, Merlin was going to use this to his advantage. Later. Now wasn’t the time. Many men owe you their lives. Merlin just sort of nodded awkwardly, not knowing how to take the credit. ”You’d have done the same.” All he’d done was sent the warning (well there was also like the badass lightning shit but we’re not talking about that right now). Anyone from Camelot would have warned them had they the knowledge and ability. I don’t suppose you could tell me, now, what you were doing? Merlin smirked. ”Tavern,” he responded quickly, before shaking his head and giving the actual answer. ”Morgana took my magic—I wasn’t going to be able to help without it.” Morgana ruined everything. Hah—Merlin had known she had been ruining everything longer than Arthur had. ”I went to go get it.” He couldn’t help but smirk again. ”Sir Gwaine took me.” Gwaine. He’d undoubtedly known something whether or not he’d admitted it to himself. After you’d drank the poison, in the cave… ”Well that one was purely for selfish reasons,” he said in response though he wasn’t very serious about it. In fact, Arthur was the one who’d been stupid and decided to risk death to get the flower when he should have just climbed out of there. That had been Merlin’s intention. ”And that time I confessed to being a sorcerer,” he added, a little more serious this time. ”It was a confession. You ruined it.” Yea, it was pretty obvious throughout the post that Merlin had never learned how to speak to royalty. Worst servant I’ve ever had.. ”Can’t imagine you’ve had many willing to stick around,” he said, returning the smile. ”Though, you’re probably right. I did try to kill you for several days.” Because this was a good time to just throw everything on him at once. The obnoxiousness was mostly a non-panic method, though every now and then Merlin remembered very well why they were moving through the forest at a painfully slow pace. ”You alright?” He had to check every now and then. I suppose I’m thankful you’re not actually mentally afflicted. ”You do know that I’m the same person—the one who you assumed was mentally afflicted, right?” He scoffed. Magic didn’t make him more intelligent. When he wasn’t using it, he was still Merlin and all of his stupid ideas… well most of them were still his stupid ideas. Arthur was just a pretty good judge of character. [/style][/style]

Of course the one time Arthur gave Merlin credit for something he would deny it. Because Tilly's characters are all bipolar. "You'd have done the same." It was true. Arthur would have.. had he the ability. "Makes it no less commendable." Arthur was a person of honor. Credit where credit is due... Even when that credit is due to Merlin, who admittedly clearly did not follow the same code of respect here. "Tavern." Yup, definitley not following the same code here. For the record Arthur would have hit Merlin in the back of the head had circumstances allowed for it. Merlin did give him an actual explanation though, which he appreciated. It made a lot of sense that the whole thing had been Morgana's fault (because pretty much everything the last few years had been Morgana's fault). Of course.. there was something else. "How did Morgana know?" Seriously.. He didn't.. Yeah, you know the look Merlin was getting right now. "I went to get it back. Sir Gwaine took me." Morgana and Gwaine knew.. He was kind of just offended now "And to think, I'd almost believed his excuse." Yeah, necessary sarcasm.. Gwaine going off before such an important battle had almost been more surprising than Merlin, although the knight had remained tight lipped about the whole thing even after coming back. Merlin then confirmed that he'd used magic.. numerous other times either to or around Arthur and really this whole thing was getting ridiculous. He needed time to process this shit. "And that time I confessed to being a sorcerer. It was a confession. You ruined it." "What? I…" He looked confused for a moment before remembering. Merlin had said it. He'd actually barged into the throne room.. in front of the entire castle… and said it. God he was an idiot. "Well I'm glad I did." Despite all the ridiculousness and the fact he was far from happy with Merlin right now, he was glad that he'd (unintentionally, admittedly) saved Merlin's life. "Can't imagine you've had many willing to stick around." "Well I haven't exactly been able to kick you out." Even when he did Merlin never went far, and he always came back.. which again, Arthur admittedly was glad for, although he was not saying that out loud. "I did try to kill you for several days." Arthur stopped walking (kay you can hardly blame him). "You what? When?" It was like no one told him anything! (Okay, no one did tell him anything.) "you alright?" "You mean aside from the fact that I just found I've been more or less completely unaware of everything that's happened since I've met you? Yeah, brilliant." "You do know that I'm the same person-" Really, Arthur didn't know anything right now. Physically he was not in a good place. Mentally he was not in a good place. To be completely frank here, Arthur couldn't think of much else that could happen to make this worse. (Oh yeah, Morgana hasn't showed up yet. Well that's coming.) "You're right. I take that back. I'm sure you still have some sort of ailment."

The one time Arthur gave Merlin credit it wasn’t deserved as much because he hadn’t exactly had a choice. Any decent person would have done the same in that situation. Merlin truly believed that. Though he didn’t appreciate the thanks any less. Makes it no less commendable. ”Thank you,” he said sincerely, nodding his head. He couldn’t deny that the credit was nice, and he knew Arthur, so the fact that he was even getting it meant that it had been important to Arthur. It was pretty awesome to get out all the explanations. He’d been dying to explain himself to someone other than Gaius for…pretty much the whole time he’d been in Camelot. The asshole dragon didn’t count. Obviously if he could have, he’d have told Arthur. He didn’t know anything and for a good reason. How did Morgana know? Merlin shrugged. He’d never said it to her face. ”I expect Mordred told her.” Because Mordred knew as well—that was a good thing to tell Arthur. Yea, good job Merlin. He got why Arthur was giving him a look and he sighed. And to think, I’d almost believed his excuse. ”I needed someone and I knew he’d go. You’d have been my first choice, but you were a bit busy, and you’d have asked for an explanation.” Only Gwaine was stupid enough to go without an explanation. It was something to entertain him for a while and that was enough for him. Well I’m glad I did. ”I guess I am too, but it’d have been worth it.” They were lucky it hadn’t been necessary. Merlin had known what he was doing when he did it. And then they started discussing how amazing a servant Merlin was. Obviously his amazingness had been what was keeping him from being kicked out. Granted, the time he tried to kill Arthur he had been slightly short of amazingness. You what? When? Merlin rolled his eyes when Arthur stopped. ”Keep moving and calm down,” he said with a smirk. ”It wasn’t my fault. I was brainwashed. That time you found me in the forest after I was missing?” The funny thing is I feel like that had been like a common occurrence but we’re going to say they’re on the same page here. ”Morgana’s never been a pleasant person.” She ruined everything. She was the person Arthur needed to be annoyed with right now. ”You’ve been perfectly aware of everything you’ve need to be aware of,” he said with reassurance. ”On the bright side, I can assure you that all those times I told you that you were knocked out—there was a good, much more manly reason that you don’t remember it.” Of course, it was more amusing for Merlin to go with the story that Arthur hit his head or something. But Merlin was getting something satisfying out of this whole conversation of explanations so Arthur deserved a little as well. You’re right. I take that back. I’m sure you still have some sort of ailment. He grinned. ”Absolutely. Working for you for so long and coming out ailment-free? Not quite sure that’s possible.” [/style][/style]

Well it was a good thing that Merlin was enjoying all the explanations, because Arthur certainly wasn't. "I expect Mordred told her." "Mordred knew?!" Mordred… yanno, the creepy weird druid child who's sword was currently embedded in Arthur's chest. At leasy Gwaine was on their side. "I needed someone and I knew he'd go… You were a bit busy and you'd have asked for an explanation." "Any sane person would have asked for an explanation." Well, that explained why he'd chosen Gwaine. (iKnowImBashingMyOwnCharacterShutUp) Of course, there was also the fact that Arthur had been trying to lead an army into battle. Ultimately the whole thing had just been very poorly timed. That was Morgana for you. "Keep moving and calm down." "You're really not in the position to be giving orders right now." Telling Arthur he'd just tried to kill him and such. Of course, Arthur knew (sort of kind of subconsciously) that Merlin couldn't have actually been trying to kill him. "That time you found me in the forest after I'd been missing?" Yeah, we're going to pretend Arthur understood right away. "You had been acting weirder than usual." He made a comment about Morgana being unpleasant and Arthur nodded understandingly. That, the two of them were on the same page about. "You've been perfectly aware of everything you've needed to be aware of." "And I suppose you've been the one deciding what I needed to be aware of?" He was the king. He was supposed to be aware of everything. People were not supposed to be getting enchanted and brainwashed and using magic under his nose. It went against.. everything. It went against everything. "There was a good, much more manly reason that you don't remember it." "I knew that!" Okay, he knew something about that. He knew that Merlin was incapable of knocking him out. That much he'd known. So yeah, Arthur was sort of glad for this confession, although he almost didn't want to what else Merlin had been keeping form him. "How many times have you actually been to the tavern?" Okay, yeah, that one had been bound to come up. Because that was really a pretty awful excuse too considering the first time Arthur took Merlin to a tavern he looked completely out of place and uncomfortable. "Working for you so long and coming out ailment free? Not quite sure that's possible." Okay, yeah, they were back to being obnoxious. Arthur pretended to look surprised.. "You work for me? I hadn't noticed. I thought to meet that qualification you would actually have to do your job."

Mordred knew?! ’I didn’t tell him!” It wasn’t like Merlin walked around to everyone other than Arthur going ‘Hey, man, I have magic.’ He may as well have with how obvious he was about it but Arthur apparently never caught on so that was beside the point. ”As I said—I’d have preferred it to be you.” He meant it. He’d wished more than anything that Arthur could know…. But he couldn’t. I mean look at the shit it was causing now. You’re really not in the position to be giving orders right now. Merlin shook his head, lowering his tone. ”I’m sorry. I know it’s a lot.” That was an understatement… but it was all he could say. You had been acting weirder than usual. He nodded as well, in confirmation. ”Wasn’t me… won’t happen again.” He hoped so, anyway. It wouldn’t if he had anything to do with it. And I suppose you’ve been the one deciding what I needed to be aware of? He sighed again, realizing that nothing he was saying was really helping. ”Arthur…” It wasn’t like he got enjoyment out of keeping Arthur in the dark. ”You hate magic. You can’t tell me I had no reason to keep it from you.” He had to get that…at least a little bit. He hadn’t exactly kept his hatred for sorcerers a secret for the last few years. I knew that! Well at least he was happy to hear something for once. How many times have you actually been to the tavern? ”Apart from going with you?” He lifted his hand and counted on his fingers. ”Two…three… none.” It wasn’t even his bright idea. ”Gaius had a horrible excuse and you still believed it.” That one wasn’t exactly Merlin’s fault. Then Arthur was obnoxious which kind of made Merlin feel better. He rolled his eyes and smiled slightly. ”You’re right—I’m awful. What can I do for you, my lord?” [/style][/style]

"I didn't tell him!" The statement was shockingly relieving. Yeah, Arthur should have known that Merlin wouldn't intentionally tell the enemy his greatest strength (unintentionally.. well.. Merlin is still the idiot he always has been), but it wasn't like he had been kept very up to date on things. For all he knew.. well, again, it was hard not to doubt just about everything at this point. It was obvious that Merlin was honest in his explanation and that got Arthur to relax some. "I'm sorry. I know it's a lot." "I just can't believe… all this time.." He was at a loss. Merlin had never needed to be a servant. Merlin had never had a reason to be so loyal to him. "You hate magic. You can't tell me I had no reason to keep it form you." "I know…." he admitted. "After everything I've said about magic, you've owed nothing to Camelot. Or to me." Had Arthur been in Merlin's position, he certainly wouldn't have been so forgiving. But again, as things began to make sense, tensions decreased, and the two of them were able to joke around. "Apart from going with you?" "Or with Gwaine." "Two..three..none. Gaius had a horrible excuse and you still believed it." "Well what did you expect me to think— that you were running off to the forest to practice magic?" Shockingly, Arthur had trusted Merlin more than that. I mean, as horrible an excuse as the tavern was, alcohol would have been a very good explanation for a lot of Merlin's problems. (You know, general clumsiness, lac of organization, forgetting his own alibis) Just saying. It had made some sense. "What can I do for you My Lord?" He had to smile back, though it didn't last. "There's nothing that you aren't already." Aw. Cute. Yeah. That happens in this episode. But clearly, that could could only be followed by some obnoxiousness. "Though, I'm certain, once we get back to Camelot, I could come up with a few things." The city had only been completely destroyed. To say he could find something would be an understatement. Of course, this was all on the pretence that the two of them would make it back to Camelot (which Arthur was enough of a realist not to believe) and if he did.. he had no intentions of assigning Merlin chores for a while. Threatening with them, however, was an entirely different story. He hadn't earned that much respect.
